Substation Physical Designer

Substation Physical Designer Location: Duluth, GA Responsibility Overview Under general to minimal supervision, provide technical design and CADD support on projects to produce designs and specifications for power and energy electrical infrastructure services, supporting transmission and distribution substations. Tasks include developing skills and generating CADD designs on projects of basic complexity, with an emphasis on substation physical design (layouts, equipment arrangements, grounding, conduit, and cable routing). Generate accurate, concise design phase deliverables—reports, technical memoranda, design manuals, plans and profiles, models, sections, details, specifications, and material lists—to meet or exceed industry standards for design, accuracy, and functionality. Your Impact Assist with collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from work sites, surveys, structural concepts, blueprints, schematics, technical drawings, and diagrams to support substation physical design and drawing development. Use computer‑aided design and drafting (CADD) software to prepare precise substation physical drawings—general arrangements, equipment plans, grounding plans, conduit and cable routing. Provide basic technical design assistance, ensuring proper illustration, fit, form, and function using geometric dimensioning, tolerance and quantity calculations, and maintaining construction and maintainability of designs. Verify calculations, design, change orders, interpret contract plans and specifications, and raise issues for resolution. Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to execute project work. Ensure plans adhere to applicable codes, standards, and client/utility requirements. Prepare multiple design versions for engineer review. Specify dimensions, materials, and procedures in compliance with contract requirements. Work collaboratively with engineers and other technical professionals on project phases, tasks, and checks. Complete training on tools supporting substation physical design. Exhibit knowledge of current drafting and design practices for substation deliverables. Make responsible decisions regarding company resources and follow WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies. Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs. Required Qualifications High School Diploma. Minimum of 3 years of post‑education experience in a substation design role supporting physical design for electrical power transmission and distribution projects, preferably in utility or industrial/commercial environments. Legally authorized to work in the United States without employer sponsorship. Clear and effective written and verbal communication in English. Familiarity with drafting and design support principles, practices, processes, methods, and techniques. Knowledge of relevant codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record‑keeping requirements for electrical/substation design. Excellent research, evaluation, and analytical skills. Strong interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with technical and non‑technical audiences. Self‑leadership, attention to detail, and the ability to learn new techniques and perform multiple tasks simultaneously. Ability to work independently under general supervision and as part of a team to meet business objectives. Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, and spreadsheets. Track record of upholding workplace safety and adherence to WSP’s health, safety, and anti‑harassment policies. Ability to work schedules beyond the typical workweek if required by projects. Preferred Qualifications Associate’s Degree in a closely related discipline. Experience with discipline‑specific design software such as AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical, or MicroStation. Exposure to substation physical design deliverables: general arrangement drawings, grounding plans, and material lists.
