Role Description This is a full-time, on-site Railcar Repair Technician role based in Batavia, NY. The Railcar Repair Technician inspects freight and tank railcars to identify structural, mechanical, and safety-related issues, and performs repairs in accordance with company standards and regulatory requirements. Daily tasks include using hand and power tools to cut, weld, grind, and replace components, as well as installing and repairing brakes, couplers, draft gears, and other railcar systems. The role involves reading and interpreting work orders, repair manuals, and safety guidelines, documenting completed work, and communicating repair status to supervisors and team members. The technician is expected to follow strict safety procedures, maintain a clean and organized work area, support quality control checks, and collaborate with colleagues to ensure railcars are restored to safe, service‑ready condition. Qualifications Ability to read and interpret technical documents, repair instructions, and safety regulations, and apply them to railcar inspection and repair activities. Skill using mechanical hand tools and power tools (e.g., wrenches, grinders, impact tools) for assembly, disassembly, and component replacement on freight and tank railcars. Basic welding and cutting abilities, or willingness to learn and work toward certification in welding and related metal fabrication processes. Strong attention to detail for inspecting railcar structures, brake systems, and couplers, and accurately documenting defects and completed repairs. Commitment to safety, including consistent use of personal protective equipment and adherence to company and regulatory safety procedures. Physical capability to work outdoors or in shop environments, stand for extended periods, lift and move heavy components, and perform tasks in varied weather conditions. Effective teamwork and communication skills to coordinate with other technicians, supervisors, and operations staff in a fast‑paced rail environment. Prior experience in railcar repair, industrial maintenance, automotive or heavy equipment repair, or a related trade is preferred but not required.
