Job Description

Under the direction of the supervisor, performs a wide variety of technical and management tasks to assist in directing the daily activities of the Laboratory, following established standards and procedures.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (including but not limited to):

• Performs all duties and responsibilities of the Histology Technologist.
• Collaborates with other technical coordinators and managers to accomplish cross-training of personnel among laboratory sections as appropriate. Coordinates training of current and new staff as directed.
• Assists in the establishment of policies and procedures, and preparation of the operating budget.
• Prepares work schedules to ensure effective coverage.
• Coordinates inventory control processes.
• Coordinates and monitors all quality control activities.
• Consults with supervisor, pathologist, or laboratory manager on critical problems or unusual conditions.
• Acts as the supervisor in his/her absence.
• Effectively communicates with physicians, nurses, hospital, and laboratory staff to resolve problems.
• Coordinates and monitors daily technical activities. Serves as staff resource for unusual and difficult technical problems.
• Troubleshoots and maintains equipment; contacts service for repair as needed.
• Keeps abreast of developments in the specialty area(s) of responsibility. Investigates new methods, procedures, etc.; and recommends application as appropriate.
• Supports and participates in the hospital's commitment to Continuous Improvement. Through the development and use of objective data, plans, implements, and evaluates processes that result in the delivery of integrated services.
• Coordinates and monitors all Proficiency testing activities including result entry and result submission.
• Coordinates all competency assessments in compliance with CAP requirements.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in medical technology or an equivalent biological science, and certification in Histotechnology, HT, or HTL (ASCP).
• Three years of clinical laboratory experience in areas pertinent to the specific position requirements.
• Good interpersonal skills are required. Proficiency in problem-solving, troubleshooting, and judgment is necessary, as well as accuracy and efficient use of time and materials. Some leadership experience is preferred.

Physical Requirements & Environment:

Exposure to infectious diseases and possibly carcinogenic chemicals. Minimal exposure to caustic agents, acids, and fumes. Occasional prolonged standing or walking. Works under constant time deadlines. Performs data entry with repetitive hand movement and visual concentration at video display terminal to review and enter data. Requires manual dexterity using fine hand manipulations. Uses protective equipment as described in the Laboratory Policy and Procedure manual. Requires exposure to power tools and heavy equipment. Complies with precautions, as defined by Infection Control staff, in patients/materials requiring isolation. Consistently uses sharps safety devices as designed to prevent injuries to self.

Pay Range: $42.00 - $56.53

The pay range listed for this position is the base hourly wage range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law. Compensation may exceed the base hourly rate depending on shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, overtime pay, and other additional pay practices, as applicable to the position and in accordance with the law.
