COMPTROLLER/FINANCE DIRECTOR
CT Humanities (CTH), a state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities located in Middletown, Connecticut, seeks a full-time (37.5 hours) comptroller/finance director.
Our mission: To cultivate, invest in, and advocate for the cultural sector in Connecticut through funding, programs, and collaboration.
POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting to the assistant director, the comptroller/finance director is responsible for planning, directing, and controlling daily financial aspects of the organization, including accounting, audit, budgeting, payroll, and financial planning in compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). This position interacts with all levels of staff and management and handles accounts payable, accounts receivable, budgeting, forecasting, and grants fiscal administration. CT Humanities currently has a staff of fourteen and an annual budget of $5 million.
Core responsibilities
1. Cash and Risk Management
- Manages banking relationships
- Enacts and oversees risk management policies and practices.
- Determines insurance needs, secures policies, and manages coverage.
- Manages all federal, state, and private funds received and prepares financial reports according to specific grantors’ requirements.
2. Accounting and Financial Controls
- Implements and administers staff-level payment authority policies and practices.
- Manages payroll, to include payroll set-up for new hires, adjustments for promotions and pay grade changes, terminations, bonuses, payroll tax, healthcare benefit contribution deductions, and 403(b) contributions.
- Manages the financial software system, ensuring it continues to comply with business regulations, federal and state requirements, all other practices, and requirements as they change over time.
- Develop and oversee accounting policies and procedures, financial process improvements, as well as internal financial control policies.
- Manages the external audit; reviews and analyzes results and recommendations for approval of the audited financial statements and 990.
3. Financial Reporting and Monitoring
- Key staff liaison to board finance and audit committees.
- Responsible for internal financial management reporting for the organization including formal reports for management, department heads, board committees and full board, as well as ad hoc reporting and analyses of budget and prior year variances as required.
- Posts journal entries, month-end and year-end close, review bank reconciliation, monthly reporting, and grant accounting
- Prepares and submits regulatory filings
4. Budgeting
- Works with the executive director and leadership team to create the organization’s annual operating budget.
- Works with advancement and program staff to develop project, program, and grant application budgets and to document budget adjustments.
- Collaborates with advancement staff to develop workflow for incoming grants and donations.
- Manages restricted funds, ensuring dispersion as specified in grant awardsand accurate expense tracking.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or equivalent experience.
- Understanding of and experience in GAAP are required.
- Five or more years of experience in an accounting role.
- Five or more years of experience in a nonprofit environment is preferred.
- Knowledge of federal and state grant accounting/reporting is desirable.
- Knowledge of banks, banking systems, and cash management.
- Knowledge of and expertise with computerized accounting systems such as QuickBooks, payroll services such as ADP, and online bill payment platforms such as BILL.com
- Ability to develop and use spreadsheets and standard business software systems. Excellent spreadsheet skills are critical.
- CPA or similar accounting certification preferred but not required.

Salary Range: $90,000-$110,000
Hours: 37.5 hours a week
CTH’s workdays are 9:00am to 5:00pm, Monday through Friday with room for flexibility in employee schedules. The comptroller/finance director will work both remotely and onsite at CTH’s Middletown office. The comptroller will work with the assistant director to create their in-office schedule upon hiring.
