$130.3kJohns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL)
Are you an experienced Occupational Health Physician looking for an opportunity to shape a comprehensive occupational health program supporting one of the nation's premier research and engineering organizations?
If so, we're looking for someone like you to join our team at APL.
The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) is seeking an Occupational Health Physician to provide clinical direction for the Laboratory's Occupational Medical Office within the Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Group. In this role, you will combine direct patient care with strategic program planning to protect the health, safety, and readiness of a highly technical workforce engaged in laboratory research and field-testing activities. Working collaboratively occupational health nurses, EHS professionals, and external healthcare providers, you will provide medical expertise across a broad range of occupational health programs.
As an Occupational Health Physician, you will...
- Provide comprehensive occupational medical services including pre-placement examinations, Department of Transportation (DOT) physicals, firefighter and safety-sensitive medical evaluations, fitness-for-duty assessments, and specialized occupational medical examinations supporting laboratory, field, maritime, and other mission activities.
- Evaluate, diagnose, and treat occupational injuries and illnesses while providing episodic and urgent medical care, coordinating specialty referrals, and supporting timely recovery and return-to-work planning.
- Interpret diagnostic testing including pulmonary function testing, audiometric evaluations, vision screening, laboratory studies, electrocardiograms, and other occupational health assessments.
- Provide medical oversight for workers' compensation cases, work restrictions, disability management, and ADA accommodation recommendations.
- Lead medical surveillance programs supporting staff working with chemical, biological, radiological, laser, respiratory, hearing conservation, and other occupational hazards.
- Direct preventive health initiatives including immunizations, travel medicine, allergy immunotherapy, health promotion activities, and early intervention programs designed to improve workforce health.
- Serve as the Medical Review Officer (MRO) with oversight for drug and alcohol testing programs.
- Partner with Environmental Health & Safety professionals during workplace assessments, exposure evaluations, incident investigations, and health-related risk assessments.
- Ensure Occupational Medical Office operations comply with OSHA, HIPAA, FMCSA, and other applicable federal, state, and professional standards.
- Collaborate on continuous improvement initiatives that enhance clinical quality, operational efficiency, regulatory compliance, customer service, and staff well-being.
- Through partnership with the Lab's IT and applications teams, provide strategic leadership for the discovery, evaluation, and potential selection, implementation, and optimization of a new Occupational Health Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system, including workflow design, clinical documentation standards, reporting capabilities, regulatory compliance, and staff training.
- Serve as the principal occupational medicine advisor on workforce health issues, emerging occupational health risks, and medical program strategy.
Qualifications
You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...
- Possess a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) degree from an accredited institution.

- Possess solid understanding of OSHA regulations, occupational exposure hazards, workers' compensation, and occupational medicine standards.
- Demonstrate outstanding clinical judgment, communication skills, and collaboration.
- Are proficient using Electronic Health Record (EHR/EMR) systems and standard business software.
- Have demonstrated ability to partner effectively with occupational health nursing staff in a collaborative, team-based care model, fostering mutual respect, shared clinical decision-making, and coordinated delivery of occupational health services without direct supervisory responsibility.
