Bus Driver

Qualifications and duties of the bus driver:

  1. Must be a properly licensed and certified as a school bus driver.
  2. Must demonstrate managerial skills in working with students and parents;
  3. Must be literate and able to communicate well;
  4. Must be knowledgeable in safety standards;
  5. Must be able to read a map;
  6. Must have a Commercial Driver's License (Personal Expense);
  7. Must have passed a Physical Examination (Personal Expense);
  8. Must be able to lift 25 pounds to head level, when required;
  9. Must be able to kneel, squat, crawl, bend and walk without limitations.
  10. Must pass a Drug Test;
  11. Must attend the Bus Driver In-service.
  12. Other qualifications considered necessary by the Board.

Reports: School Principal(s) and Transportation manager – Immediate Supervisor(s) – (Shared Responsibility); Superintendent of Schools- General Supervisor

Job goal: To provide safe and efficient transportation so that students may enjoy the fullest possible advantage from the district's curriculum and extra-curricular program.

Performance responsibilities:

  1. Obey all traffic laws.
  2. Observe all mandatory safety regulations for school buses.
  3. Maintain discipline when students are on bus.
  4. Report undisciplined students to Principal(s) and /or the proper authorities.
  5. Keep assigned bus clean (swept and washed).
  6. Keep to assigned schedule.
  7. Check bus before each route or trip for mechanical defects, sufficient fuel, oil and proper tools to change tires.
  8. Perform Pre and Post Inspection of Buses.
  9. Notify the proper authority in case of mechanical failure or lateness.
  10. Drop off student only at authorized stops.
  11. Exercise responsible leadership when on out-of-district school trips.
  12. Transport only authorized students.
  13. Report all accidents and complete all required reports.
  14. Enforce regulations against smoking, eating and fighting on the bus.
  15. Attend meetings with Supervisor(s)/principal(s) as requested and/or mandated.
  16. Log all out-going long distance telephone calls and fax transmittals.
  17. Attend board meetings at the request of the Superintendent of Schools or his/her authorize designee.
  18. Perform other assigned tasks required of the supervisor(s).
