Equipment Operator I (EOI)

This Equipment Operator I (EOI) position supports the Yard Waste Center within Solid Waste Services. Depending on the assignment, this position provides labor required to directing customers, assist customers unloading material, and maintenance and equipment operation for the Center's compost and mulch production and Wilders Grove Landfill.

The City of Raleigh's Yard Waste Center Division provides reliable, safe, and efficient yard waste composting and mulch production services that help keep our community clean and thriving. Our Operations team plays an essential role in processing yard waste and wood waste into beneficial products while providing responsive service to residents throughout the City. As an Equipment Operator I, you'll be part of a team that works together in the field to deliver dependable services, operate specialized equipment, and make a direct impact on the quality of life in our community.

Duties and Responsibilities

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.

• Provides specialized, skilled general maintenance in support of the Yard Waste Center and Wilders Grove Landfill or maintenance function
• Work includes repairing and maintaining buildings and/or grounds; preventative maintenance and/or construction activities for the Yard Waste Center and Wilders Grove Landfill
• Performs daily maintenance and operation inspections on all operated equipment. Prepares and submits inspection records and reports
• Assist in monitoring inventory, resources and materials needs
• Use appropriate in-vehicle technology to safely complete daily work assignments
• Addresses issues and concerns of internal and external customers
• Maintaining cleanliness of work area, tools, and equipment; and following safety policies and procedures
• In the absence of the Scale Operator, the EOI will serve provide back-up support for the Scale House operations
• Safely operates heavy equipment, (including but not limited to 45 ton articulated off road dump trucks, rubber tire loaders, water truck, and others) to dump, water, monitor and otherwise efficiently maintain a large windrow composting system

Typical Qualifications

Education and Experience: High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalency; Less than 1 year experience in light to medium construction equipment operation or related work OR Any equivalent combination of training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted

Licenses or Certifications:

• Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire

Knowledge Of:

• Standard practices, methods and materials of assigned work
• Specialized equipment relevant to area of assignment

• Establishing and maintaining productive working relationships

• Perform routine inspections to ensure safe operating conditions
• Follow instructions provided by a supervisor

ADA and Other Requirements: Work Environment and Physical Effort: Medium: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work Environment: Work is typically performed in an outdoor environment, street environment (near moving traffic), at a construction site and in and around vehicles. Employees may occasionally be in confined spaces, and warehouse or shop environments. Work Exposures: There is frequent exposure to extreme cold (below 32 degrees), extreme heat (above 100 degrees), moving mechanical parts, fumes and airborne particles and loud noises.
