Company: Hurst Construction, Inc.

Location: Kansas City Metro + Lawrence, KS.

Hurst Construction remodels and builds architecturally significant homes in Kansas City. Architect and designer driven work, real detail, no production volume. We are hiring an experienced carpenter to take assigned scopes in the field and build them right.

Here is what is actually different about working here.

The week is 40 hours:

We build the schedule for 40 and we hold to it. Hurst does not run its season on mandatory overtime, and nobody here is expected to give up Saturdays to keep a job on track. When a week genuinely needs a few extra hours, that is a conversation rather than an assumption.

The millwork comes from our own shop:

Blind Rabbet is our millwork shop, in house. Cabinets, built-ins, and architectural millwork are drawn and built under our own roof, then installed by our own people. Almost no residential builder in this metro can say that. It means the finish work you are installing came from a shop you can walk into, and when something is off, we fix it ourselves instead of waiting six weeks on a vendor.

You can grow without being pushed into managing people:

We run two tracks. One leads toward running a crew on site. The other leads toward harder work, deeper skill, and higher pay with nobody reporting to you. Both are real seats, and both pay more than this one. If you are the best carpenter on the job and have no interest in supervising anyone, you are not stuck here.

Pay and Benefits:

• $26 to $32 per hour, based on what you can actually do.

The Work:

You own your scope. You are not running the crew, and you are not carrying the schedule, the budget, or the client. We separated that out on purpose so the people building the work can build.

• Take an assigned scope and carry it to completion, built to standard.
• Framing, trim, doors and windows, cabinet and millwork install, finish carpentry.
• Read a set of drawings, understand it, and lay out your own work from it.
• Protect the house. Floors, finished surfaces, and everything already in place.
• Working in existing homes where nothing is square, level, or plumb.

A note on that fourth one, because it matters more here than it does most places. We work in homes people are living in, around finishes that are already paid for. Protection is not the part of the day you rush through to get to the real work. It is the real work. A scratched floor or a dinged stair rail costs more than the day it saved, and it tells the client exactly how much attention the rest of the job is getting. We protect heavily and we expect everyone to.

What we are looking for:

Roughly three years or more of real residential carpentry, remodel work especially. That number is context, not a checklist. What matters is that a scope can be handed to you and left with you.

Past that, judgment. Remodeling turns up surprises, because you are building inside something somebody else already built. When one shows up, come to the conversation with a couple of ways forward rather than stopping and waiting to be told. Know which problems are yours to work out and which ones need to be handed up before you start cutting. Asking early is cheap. Guessing on something you should have asked about is not.

You will need your own hand tools , a reliable vehicle, and a valid driver's license. You should be able to lift 60 pounds, work at height, and work outside when the job calls for it.
