Preferred Qualifications Role Purpose The Patient Access Representative is often the first point of contact for our patients and must represent BJC with the highest standard of customer service, compassion, and perform all duties in a manner consistent with our mission, vision, values, and BJC service standards. The role facilitates all components of the patient’s entrance into any BJC facility, requiring a high level of emotional intelligence and the ability to make a personal connection. The role highly impacts the ability to maximize reimbursements and prevent denials by accurate collection of demographics and insurance information, benefit verification, and point‑of‑service collection. Selecting the correct patient from the master person index (MPI) is critical to patient safety. The team member must possess a friendly demeanor, exceptional attention to detail, and maintain knowledge of insurance carriers, Medicare guidelines, and federal, state, and accreditation agencies. Responsibilities Hospital registration and scheduling within multiple BJC systems. Assure proper patient identification, register, schedule, verify insurance, scan and retrieve documents, and validate that orders are complete, signed by the ordering provider, and correct. Attention to detail is essential to ensure accurate patient records. Strong communication skills are necessary to provide patients with preparation instructions for each scheduled procedure, education on financial responsibilities, and collection of applicable payments. Ensure compliance with complex regulatory guidelines, including Medicare Secondary Payer (MSP), HIPAA Privacy Standards, Patient Bill of Rights and Responsibilities, Advance Directives, Consent to Treat, EMTALA, and JCAHO Requirements. Each patient completes HIPAA acknowledgment. This position requires independent thinking to solve complex issues. Utilize critical thinking skills to assess and respond to a variety of situations, anticipating patients’ needs and responding to them. Communicate professionally, positively, and patient‑focused with all patients, families, and co‑workers, whether in‑person or by phone. This responsibility is critical to ensure a positive patient experience, maximize reimbursements, minimize denials, and preserve the integrity of the patient’s clinical and financial record by correctly selecting from our MPI. Working independently, this team member consistently meets or exceeds quality standards and serves as a mentor for less skilled employees. BJC has determined this is a safety‑sensitive position. The ability to work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner is an essential function of this job.
