Wastewater Operator I / Wastewater Operator II One Position Available
The City is recruiting for one (1) Wastewater Operator position within the Wastewater Operator classification series. The position may be filled at either the Wastewater Operator I or Wastewater Operator II level, depending on the selected candidate's qualifications, certifications, knowledge, skills, and experience. Wastewater Operator I is the entry-level classification within the Wastewater Operator series. Employees at this level perform a variety of duties related to the operation and maintenance of the Wastewater Treatment Plant while developing the knowledge, skills, and experience necessary to progress within the classification series. Wastewater Operator II is the experienced-level classification within the series. The Operator II level is distinguished from Operator I by the required level of certification, demonstrated understanding of wastewater treatment plant equipment and operations, and the ability to analyze treatment processes and make recommendations for process changes.

Summary: The Wastewater Operator II performs skilled work, monitoring and controlling operations of the City of Snoqualmie sewer collection and treatment facilities, reuse water transmission, during assigned shifts and emergency situations. The Wastewater Operator II also participates in the overall operational functioning of assigned work on a team where the Parks & Public Works Director is the head of the Department.
Examples of Duties: A union position that performs general sewer collection utility work in the installation, maintenance, repair, and operation of control systems and mechanical and electrical equipment associated with Sanitary Sewer collection, and treatment systems. The work requires skills related to utilities equipment and systems. Duties include performs a variety of work at a fully skilled level in the operation of the City of Snoqualmie Treatment Facilities, collections system, and reuse production. Responsible for the operation and maintenance of all assigned areas to include wastewater treatment, laboratory, water reuse, collections, and stormwater conveyance maintenance facilities of the city. Operates and monitors computer system designed to control plant processes at all treatment facilities. Performs various operational positions from process monitoring and control, laboratory, sample collection, and NPDES permit administration. Monitor plant processes and participate with operations team in controlling operations to ensure plant effluent meets established federal, state, and local standards. Perform plant operations techniques and procedures, ensuring established policies for wastewater systems are followed. Perform work following safe operation practices. Employees in this classification are responsible for assuring the technical correctness of their own work. May perform duties of similar complexity in other maintenance areas as required or assigned. Works under the direct supervision of a Lead and general supervision of the Division Superintendent. The Parks and Public Works Department has a team approach to its maintenance activities. While this position is primarily in domestic water maintenance, the overall maintenance priorities will provide the opportunity to participate in other maintenance function at times. Scope of Responsibilities: Wastewater Operator II is accountable for performing all assignments in a timely, effective, and efficient manner. The following duties are not inclusive of all duties; may perform a variety of other duties as assigned., including assisting other Parks and Public Works Department divisions in the event of an emergency. Members of the Parks and Public Works maintenance team are involved on a routine basis in decision making, goal setting, scheduling, hiring, planning, peer review, and problem solving. They determine how they will work together and how they will rotate through various job tasks associated with their work. They have a part in developing performance measures for the group and in setting goals around these measures. Members are results oriented, accountable, and work at a high standard of excellence. Incumbent, along with other employees in this division, is responsible for the overall condition of the buildings, equipment, and systems assigned to the Cities wastewater division. Use computerized maintenance databases to monitor related records, such as work orders, preventative and corrective maintenance systems, equipment specifications, and work histories. Prioritize and schedule maintenance in collaboration with maintenance and operations supervisory staff. Depending on area of assignment, inspect water pumping stations on a regular basis. Perform other related work as required. Responds to emergency situations such as weather events and natural disasters including heavy rain, downed trees, snow and ice events, windstorms, earthquakes, and mudslides/flooding.
Typical Qualifications: Licensing and Certification Valid Washington State Driver's License with driving record free of serious or frequent violations. Washington State certification as a Wastewater Operator II is required. Ability to acquire and maintain the following certifications within (1) year of hire is required: Washington State Traffic Control Flagger. First Aid CPR/AED Forklift/powered industrial truck operator certification in accordance with (LNI) rules FEMA ICS 100, 200, 700, 800 Wastewater collection system specialist required within one year Knowledge of Principles, practices, materials, and operating procedures pertinent to the operation and maintenance of a municipal wastewater treatment, including legal, technical and organizational aspects, as well as sources of current knowledge of the field. Process of activated sludge wastewater treatment, tertiary treatment for reclamation, and basic drinking water filtration technology including basic chemicals, bacteriological and biological processes Occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions applicable to maintenance and operations work in sewer operations. AWWA, DOE, DOH, EPA and other applicable standard specifications as it relates to all forms of Water Treatment, including sewer, and reclamation. Water sampling methods. Knowledge and skill in the operation of telemetry equipment. Municipal wastewater collection system and its operating facilities and/or municipal water treatment plant systems. Water treatment, collection, and pumping practices or similar heavy industrial experience. Skill and Ability to Skill in the operation of various vehicles, equipment and tools relating to this division. Maintain a safe and clean work area; clean and maintain tools and equipment used in the performance of duties. Safely and efficiently operate and utilize with skill all tools and equipment associated with the corrective and preventative maintenance activities in an industrial process setting, including various machining, and welding equipment associated with plant maintenance. Use computer terminals, software programs, and computer systems standard to the area of assignment, including programmable logic controllers and data-acquisition programs. Analyze and act on a variety of data and instrument readings and respond quickly to plant operations issues. Read and interpret complex engineering plans, schematics, wiring diagrams, work orders, flow charts, and technical manuals. Absorb, analyze, and apply new technical information; and communicate technical information clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Accurately log instrument readings, operating information; perform a variety of maintenance and housekeeping work; recognize and respond quickly to problems in the facilities assigned; work cooperatively with others as a member of a technical operations team; and to perform basic mathematical calculations. Work safely with electrical equipment, toxic chemicals, and in unpleasant and/or dangerous conditions. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, other City staff, and the public. Relate to others in a courteous and respectful manner, work in a team atmosphere. Maintain a work environment free of discrimination, harassment, and retaliation. Work safely and in compliance with federal and state laws and regulations, and with City laws, policies, and standards. Support diversity and multi-cultural understanding in the workplace. Apply interpersonal skills using tact, patience, courtesy, and good judgment. Be coachable. Collaborate on a regular basis. Demonstrate accountability. The Wastewater Operator II may be assigned to hazardous work areas such as street surfaces, rights of way, medians, in ditches, pits and underground vaults, confined spaces, around heavy equipment, and operating potentially dangerous tools. Typical assignments are out of doors, occasionally requiring work in inclement weather at dirty, wet, noisy, or cramped work sites. The work involves strenuous physical labor, requiring physical dexterity and mechanical aptitude. This position is required to participate in a weekly rotating 24-hour on-call duty after the successful completion of probation period. This position is also required to respond in the event of local emergencies as required.
