Quality Control TechnicianThe Quality Control Technician is responsible for overseeing and performing quality inspections throughout the shipbuilding process to ensure all work meets contractual requirements, regulatory standards, and internal quality procedures. This role serves as a technical resource for production teams, and acts as a primary liaison between Quality, Engineering, and Production to ensure compliance and continuous improvement.Essential Job FunctionsQuality Inspections & CompliancePerform and oversee inspections of hull fabrication, welding, structural assemblies, piping, outfitting, coatings, and systems installation.Serve as the primary point of contact for quality control-related issues within assigned areas of the shipyard.Verify work complies with contract drawings and specifications, regulatory requirements (ABS, DNV, USCG, NAVSEA, or customer-specific standards), shipyard quality procedures and work instructions, and TMDE for current calibration.Conduct and oversee in-process, final, and witness inspections at predetermined hold points.Hydrostatic and Tank Testing – Monitor testing performed, provide technical support, ensure testing is accurately documented and witnessed by Class as required.Facilitate surveyor visits as build progresses for structural inspections, operational tests at dock and sea trials. Provide surveyor with material and equipment certificates as required. Accurately record and disseminate survey results to appropriate company personnel for corrective action if needed. Follow up on "Open Surveyor" issues for resolution.Documentation & ReportingEnsure accurate and timely completion of inspection reports, checklists, and test records.Maintain the maintenance of inspection records for audits, customer reviews, and regulatory inspections.Problem Solving & Continuous ImprovementAssist Quality Assurance Engineer in root cause analysis and corrective action development for quality issues.Help identify trends, recurring defects, and opportunities for process improvement.Provide quality input during ship checks, trials, and readiness reviews.Support internal and external audits as required.Position in OrganizationThis position reports directly to the Quality Control Lead.Decision MakingMust continuously demonstrate excellent administrative judgment and assume responsibility for decisions and their consequences and results impacting the department's associates and quality of service within the department.CommunicationMust possess excellent communication, organizational, analytical, and written skills, including the ability to listen, talk, and teach. Possess the ability to communicate verbally and in writing positively and effectively with employees, co-workers, suppliers, and vendors. Demonstrate an all-pervasive positive attitude.EducationHigh school diploma or GED required; Associate degree or technical training preferredQualifications3 or more years of experience within the Mechanical, Shipbuilding, Marine Fabrication, or Heavy Manufacturing industries.Strong working knowledge of welding, metallurgy, and fabrication processes, blueprint reading and ship drawings, marine coatings, piping systems, and structural construction.Experience with classification society inspections and/or government shipbuilding standards preferred.CertificationASQ Certification a plus.NDT certifications (VT, MT, PT, UT) a plus.Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) a plus.Familiarity with ISO 9001 quality systems is beneficial.Physical RequirementsThis position requires the ability to tolerate the motions induced during sea trials. Must be physically able to handle all physical requirements of maintaining buildings and equipment which includes, but is not limited to, repeated bending, stretching, twisting and periodic lifting of 25 pounds. Must have full control and use of all limbs and the ability to climb stairs and ladders and must have the ability to stand for extended periods of time over the course of the shift.General StatementThis description is a general statement of required primary duties and responsibilities performed regularly and continuously.
