Position Summary A Peer Support Specialist is a trained individual who provides support, guidance, and encouragement to others experiencing similar challenges, particularly in mental health, substance abuse, or other recovery-related areas. Job Overview The Peer Support Specialist will utilize their lived experience to foster hope and recovery among individuals facing mental health challenges, substance use disorders, other related issues. This role involves providing support through sharing personal experiences, helping clients access resources, and promoting independence and self-advocacy. Responsibilities Provide one-on-one and group support to individuals seeking recovery or support. Share personal experiences to inspire hope and encourage. Assist clients in setting and achieving personal goals. Facilitate support groups and workshops focused on recovery themes. Help clients navigate social services, healthcare, and community resources. Maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical guidelines. Collaborate with healthcare providers, social workers, and community organizations. Participate in ongoing training and education to enhance skills and knowledge. Document interactions and progress according to organizational standards. Qualifications Lived experience with mental health or substance use challenges, demonstrating recovery. Certification as a Peer Support Specialist, within 6 months of hiring date. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Empathetic, non-judgmental, and supportive demeanor. Basic knowledge of community resources and support services. Computer literacy for documentation and communication. Preferred Experience Prior experience in a peer support role or related field. Familiarity with mental health or addiction services. Training in trauma-informed care and recovery principles. Work Environment The role may involve working in various settings, including hospitals, community centers, schools and after school care. May require flexible hours, including evenings or weekends, to meet client needs. This is a one year grant funded position. Incomplete applications may be rejected.
