Respiratory Therapist - Per Diem Days

Responsibilities Provide diagnostic and therapeutic respiratory care to patients of all age groups, including assessment, administration, and documentation of intermittent aerosolized medication therapy, bronchial hygiene, oxygen, and lung expansion therapies. Respond to cardiopulmonary emergencies by delivering airway maintenance and manual or mechanical ventilatory support using a variety of devices and techniques. Administer therapeutic gases, inhaled aerosol medications, and humidity therapy. Obtain, review, and interpret clinical data, assess response to respiratory care interventions, and consult with medical and nursing personnel to optimize patient‑care planning. Perform arterial blood gas analysis and other cardiopulmonary diagnostic procedures. Provide patient and family instruction on respiratory therapy self‑administration and proper use of equipment and supplies. Apply, maintain, monitor, troubleshoot, and document non‑invasive and invasive mechanical ventilatory support systems; assess patient‑ventilator interrelationship to assure safe, appropriate support and timely weaning. Contribute to departmental quality and performance goals. Consult with Respiratory Care Specialists, Nursing, Medical, and other patient‑care personnel to develop individualized care plans for optimal respiratory care. Maintain all age‑specific technical competencies and compliance required to serve all clinical areas of the Respiratory Care Service. Required Qualifications Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) certification from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC). Current, valid California Respiratory Care License. Basic Life Support (BLS) and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certifications. Flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations. Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively within intra‑ and inter‑departmental teams. Positive work relationships with peers, supervisors, and others; cooperative, receptive, and responsive to colleagues’ needs. Knowledge and abilities essential to perform all required procedures and assessments, and thorough understanding of respiratory care techniques and rationale. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; effective team player. Strong critical‑thinking and problem‑solving abilities; capable of sound clinical decisions. Capability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast‑paced healthcare environment. Empathy and patient‑centered approach; commitment to high‑quality patient care. Flexibility to work variable shifts, including weekends and holidays, as dictated by departmental needs. Active participation in continuing education and commitment to professional development. Preferred Qualifications Prior experience and demonstrated abilities in critical or emergency care. Experience in implementation and application of patient‑driven protocols. Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification. Previous experience in a pediatric respiratory care setting (preferred but not mandatory). Required Licenses / Certifications Valid and current California Respiratory Care Board Respiratory Care Practitioner License. Current Registered Respiratory Therapy (RRT) Certificate from NBRC. Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (HCP) certification. Current Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification (applicable to Respiratory Care Practitioners at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Mission Bay Campus).
