PERMIT TECHNICIAN

Job Summary Provides technical support for the building inspection and permitting process. Assists customer’s inquiries, applications, and payment of permit fees. Assists with processing the city beer and wine and taxicab licenses, and schedules service order inspections to facilitate citizens getting their utilities. Promptly and courteously responds to phone calls, answering questions accurately, making appropriate referrals to inspectors, and relaying messages to staff. Accurately enters and maintains building permit data to ensure easy retrieval of information and enable valid reporting. Accurately record building permit data to facilitate inspections, payment collections, utility hook-ups, etc. Perform typing, filing, process mail, and other duties to support smooth office operations. Consistently follow cash management processes as outlined by the Cash Management Policy and Procedures. Performs other related duties as assigned. Education and Experience High school diploma or equivalent. Two (2) years’ experience in a related field. Or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge Required by the Position Knowledge of customer service policies and procedures. Knowledge of department accounting processes. Skill in the provision of customer service. Skill in analyzing problems and identifying solutions. Skill in establishing cooperative and productive working relationships.Skill in performing mathematical calculations. Skill in operating computers and other standard office equipment. Skill in Microsoft Office software (Microsoft Word and Excel). Skill in interpersonal relations. Skill in oral and written communication. Supervisory Controls The Construction Development Coordinator assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results. Guidelines Guidelines include the employee handbook. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application. Complexity The work consists of related technical duties. Frequent interruptions contribute to the complexity of the work. Scope and Effect The purpose of this position is to provide technical support for the permitting process. Success in this position contributes to the efficiency of the permitting process. Personal Contacts Contacts are typically with co-workers, architects, engineers, surveyors, contractors, property owners, and members of the general public. Purpose of Contacts Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services. Physical Demands The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects.
