The University of Texas Medical Branch
Position Overview The Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch seeks a Division Chief of General Internal Medicine to lead a dynamic, expansionist role overseeing both ambulatory primary care and inpatient hospital medicine across UTMB’s growing multi‑campus health system. This strategic growth position focuses on deploying high‑quality academic hospital medicine services across all campuses, developing comprehensive perioperative medicine programs, and driving measurable improvements in access metrics and inpatient quality, including length of stay and complication rates. Institutional Context UTMB is a $3.5 billion academic health center established in 1891, comprising Schools of Medicine, Nursing, Health Professions, Public and Population Health, and a Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. The center operates four hospital campuses with over 1,000 beds and more than 90 clinics, serving a population exceeding 1.8 million across Southeast Texas. UTMB is a Level I Trauma Center for a nine‑county region and hosts nationally recognized research programs and biocontainment facilities. Department Overview The Department of Internal Medicine is the largest within UTMB’s John Sealy School of Medicine, offering a categorical residency program and a unique Aerospace/Internal Medicine partnership. Under the leadership of Dr. Salim Hayek, the department emphasizes radical transparency, academic success, and collaborative culture. Division Strengths and Resources The Division of General Internal Medicine serves as the academic general medicine practice for the UTMB Health System, providing comprehensive adult primary care, inpatient hospital medicine, surgical co‑management, and medical education. Academic Hospitalist Program – Faculty hospitalists provide attending‑level care on teaching services, incorporating point‑of‑care ultrasound and evidence‑based medicine into daily teaching rounds. Surgical Co‑Management and Perioperative Medicine Services – Medical co‑management for surgical patients across multiple services, optimizing perioperative care and reducing complications. Ambulatory Primary Care Clinics – Academic primary care clinics across the multi‑campus system, emphasizing chronic disease management and preventive medicine. Resident Education and Supervision – Core education for the categorical residency program, providing supervision on inpatient and outpatient services. Quality Improvement and Outcomes Research – Initiatives focused on reducing length of stay, minimizing complications, and enhancing patient outcomes. Primary Responsibilities Clinical Leadership Lead strategic expansion of academic hospital medicine services across all campuses, ensuring high‑quality inpatient care and robust educational experiences for residents and students. Develop comprehensive perioperative medicine services, including preoperative risk assessment clinics, inpatient surgical co‑management, and postoperative care coordination. Drive measurable improvements in inpatient quality metrics such as length of stay, complication rates, readmission rates, and patient experience scores. Improve access metrics for both ambulatory and inpatient services, enhancing patient access to primary care and expediting hospital admissions. Recruit, mentor, and retain clinical faculty to support service line growth and build a high‑performing team. Maintain an active clinical practice in general internal medicine appropriate to academic rank and responsibilities. Educational Leadership Oversee division contributions to the ACGME‑accredited residency program, ensuring high‑quality clinical teaching experiences. Direct medical student education, coordinating clerkship experiences and mentorship programs. Foster faculty development in clinical teaching and support educational scholarship and curricular innovation. Research and Scholarship Develop a research portfolio focused on health services research, perioperative outcomes, and care delivery innovation. Leverage UTMB’s research infrastructure to advance investigation in perioperative risk stratification and population health management. Support quality improvement and clinical outcomes research among faculty, residents, and students. Administrative and Strategic Responsibilities Manage division budget and business plan, optimize resource allocation, and work with departmental leadership on revenue cycle performance. Participate in departmental strategic planning, faculty recruitment, and institutional committees. Collaborate with hospital leadership, nursing, case management, and surgical departments to ensure coordinated, high‑quality care delivery. Foster relationships with regional referral networks and community physicians to enhance UTMB’s academic role. Candidate Profile Required Qualifications MD or DO degree from an accredited institution. Board certification in Internal Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine (or equivalent). Eligibility for medical licensure in Texas. Academic rank of Associate Professor or Professor at an accredited medical school.
