GENERAL STATEMENT
The Student Media Manager supports the daily operations of 22 West Media, ASI’s student-run media department. This department comprises radio, video, and magazine outlets. Their role is to provide a high-quality educational experience for students interested in practical, hands-on work related to magazine publication, internet and terrestrial radio broadcasting, and motion-picture production.
As part of their responsibilities, this individual trains and coordinates the work of student employees, interns and volunteers. The Student Media Manager advises them in creating quality music, publications, video, news and information, and marketing while also fostering the freedom of expression for diverse ideas and opinions. Additionally, the incumbent offers educational and developmental opportunities through instruction and hands-on training.
This position provides professional mentorship and advisement to ensure the smooth operation of the department and the production of student-driven content. They advise and assist student assistants in implementing operating procedures under direction of the Assistant Director. All of this is done in accordance with ASI and University regulations, as well as Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations and College Media Advisers Code of Ethics.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following. Other duties may be assigned.1. Supervises student assistants to assist with the planning of objectives, developing operating policies, coordinating functions, and establishing responsibilities and procedures.
2. Promotes collaboration and cross-promotion among all branches within 22 West Media, as well as with ASI programs.
3. In conjunction with the Faculty Advisor and Assistant Director, Student Media, provides regularly scheduled critiques of publications and broadcasts, evaluates programs and suggests modifications.
4. Works with the Assistant Director, Student Media to ensure the fulfillment of all broadcasting responsibilities and recordkeeping requirements of 22 West Radio in accordance with the standards of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the CSULB Research Foundation Board of Directors and ASI.
5. Establishes and maintains effective relationships with faculty, staff, and academic departments. Meets with student and faculty groups to assist in collaborations, staff and volunteer recruitment, staff development, and overall positive image of student media. Coordinates media activities with other university programs. Recruits and promotes student participation in student media operations and activities.
6. Assists with oversight of internships program. In collaboration with the Assistant Director, Student Media and Faculty Advisor, coordinates and supervises the student media internships and provides instruction. Helps coordinate with the Journalism, Cinematic Arts, and Fine Arts departments to provide approved internships for academic credit and coordinates the internship Canvas page.
7. Conducts orientation programs for media staff and volunteers under the direction of the Assistant Director. Provides guidance and advice to students in developing skills in journalism, television and film production, broadcasting, marketing and effective teamwork. Attends staff meetings and conferences with other staff members individually and collectively, as necessary.
8. Coordinates and conducts workshops on marketing, outreach, writing, reporting, programming, producing, legal issues and other topics important to media operations and student development. Utilizes outside resources such as journalism faculty and media industry professionals as much as possible. Establishes relationships with local media to acquire professional advice and resources for student media participants.
9. Monitors student media budgets and advises student media lead student assistants on the financial status of their respective outlets under the direction of the Assistant Director. Tracks budget expenditures, reviews activity reports and financial statements to determine progress and status in attaining financial objectives.
10. Supports advertising and underwriting efforts as assigned by the Assistant Director. Works with student assistants on sales presentations and pitches to potential advertisers and underwriters. Coordinates with student assistants to provide advertisers and underwriters with cross-platform advertising solutions.
11. Directs student assistants in the development and execution of marketing efforts, including but not limited to social media, graphic design, website content, digital and in-person outreach efforts. Ensures a cohesive and professional brand driven by student voice.
12. Advises students regarding material that is potentially libelous, slanderous, obscene, or conducive to a material and substantial disruption of campus activities. Upon threat of litigation or complaint of content, immediately notifies the Director, Programs and Communications and Assistant Director, Student Media.
13. Assists with oversight for technical systems, such as automation software and hardware, to assure uninterrupted programming. Maintains a high level of competence and understanding regarding changes and developments in broadcast technology. Monitors the use and maintenance of information technology and other electronic resources provided to student media under the direction of the Assistant Director.
14. Represents student media and ASI at professional conferences, conventions, trade shows, social events, and other gatherings to strengthen relationships, present lectures, or participate in seminars. Keeps current with the latest developments in newspaper and magazine, television, film and broadcasting industries. Researches and monitors financial, technological, and demographic factors to capitalize on opportunities.
15. Coordinates the necessary recruitment, hiring, training, supervision and evaluation for volunteers, interns, and student employees.
16. Ensures special event programming by 22 West Media meets all ASI and University regulation requirements including mitigating risk. Works closely with Assistant Director, Student Media on all events both on and off campus.
17. Provides support for event setup and teardown and operates ASI carts, vans, and trucks to transport equipment, supplies, and materials for departmental activities, including campus-wide productions, event coverage, DJ events, and community-based programs. Must be able to safely transport equipment on and off campus in support of departmental operations and special events.
18. Uses independent judgement and decision making in daily responsibilities, problem solving, and advisement of students.
19. Maintains an office environment that provides an equitable, diverse, inclusive, and accessible student experience that is mission-driven and aligned with ASI and 22 West Media goals.
20. Assists with ASI and campus-wide initiatives, events and committees as needed.
21. Other duties as assigned, reasonably within the scope of the job.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Directly and indirectly supervise staff including but not limited to student employees and volunteers in the 22 West Media department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with Associated Students policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSEducation and/or Experience
Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration, journalism, cinematic arts, film and electronic arts, communications, or a job-related field; two years related professional experience in a college media program or job-related media industry. A master’s degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience. Experience in the use of broadcast and video equipment to both instruct their use and troubleshoot equipment problems preferred. Experience in non-commercial broadcasting and on-air experience preferred.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rules and regulations and broadcast management, including First Amendment protections. Thorough knowledge of the practices, procedures and activities of college media programs; working knowledge of interview techniques, the principles and practices of student development, and the principles of individual and group behavior; general knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management; general knowledge of research techniques.
Ability to analyze and interpret financial, legal, and operational documents; respond effectively to inquiries from diverse stakeholders; write and present information in a clear, professional manner; apply basic mathematical concepts; solve practical problems using sound judgment; follow written and verbal instructions; and work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and perspectives.

Current California Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record as determined by ASI.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONSSchedule
Must be available to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends, to support and oversee scheduled programs and events as needed.
