Surgical Oncology Breast Surgeon, Department of Surgery (M68020)

Mission or goal of unit: The mission of the VCU Division ofSurgical Oncology is to both provide the Mid-Atlantic’s mostadvanced, patient-oriented, cost-effective and safe SurgicalOncology Services, as well as to create the finest trainingenvironment for the region’s future Surgical OncologySpecialists.

Chief purpose of this position:

This position is open rank, an early- to mid-career collateral,non-tenure track faculty position in the VCU Surgical OncologyDivision. The faculty member should have clinical and researchinterests that complement and expand on existing expertise in theDivision. Clinical and research areas of particular interest shouldbe in the treatment of benign and malignant breast diseases. Thefaculty member should also support the current Division’s expandingefforts to provide excellent oncology surgical support to many ofour current regional outreach programs, including Massey CancerCenter. Finally, the faculty member should support the Division’scommitment to teaching Surgery Residents and, Fellows as well asVCU Medical Students.

Responsibilities

Teaching

The faculty member will have teaching responsibilities in SurgicalOncology with an emphasis on Breast Surgery.

Research

The faculty member must participate in clinical or basic scienceresearch relevant to the expanding field of Surgical Oncology.Research in the field of cancer disparities, translationaloncology, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, or cancer genomics wouldbe preferred. A record of publication in refereed journals orpresentations at national meetings is expected. The faculty memberis expected to develop interdisciplinary collaborations withinVCU’s Massey Cancer Center, Medical Oncology and Radiation Oncologyto achieve these goals.

Service

The faculty member will serve on University, Health System, andDepartmental committees as requested by leadership. They willassist with the recruitment, training, and placement of Residentssand Fellows among the varied specialties outlines above.

Clinical

Faculty member clinical responsibility will be in the care of theOncology Surgical patients on the MCV campus of VCU, as well ascommunity outreach satellite location(s). They will be responsiblefor the development of an active surgical practice, with thesupport of the Division and Department’s leadership.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

• Board Certification or Eligibility in General Surgery.
• Advanced training fellowship in Surgical Oncology or BreastSurgery
• Commitment to Outcomes, Clinical and/or Basic ScienceResearch
• Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment ofrespect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty,staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or acommitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.
