A Brief Overview Provides care in a medical practice office or clinic under the direction of a provider. Maintains a clean and safe environment, provides patient care and gives patients information. Provides mentoring for LevelI Medical Assistants in the physician office. Models appropriate behavior as exemplified in The Methodist Mission, Vision and Values. What you will do Proactively assist patients throughout the visit as needed, accompany patients to the exam/procedure room. Respond to patient needs in a professional and friendly manner. Perform clerical activities related to patient care such as scheduling appointments and diagnostic imaging exams, lab callbacks, prior authorizations, retrieving medical histories, filling out patient paperwork and forms, and answering and returning phone calls. Collect and record patient data including height, weight, temperature, pulse, respiration rate and blood pressure, and basic information about the presenting and previous conditions. Record pertinent patient information, surgical history, review systems, past medical history, social history, medical management including but not limited to allergies, etc. Assist with physical examination preparations. Perform EKGs, remove sutures/staples, change sterile and non‑sterile dressings as directed. Effectively collect and prepare specimens for laboratory analysis utilizing non‑invasive techniques, including urine, sputum and stool. Assist with undressing, cleansing and positioning patients for specific procedures. Perform skin tests and venipuncture of skin for the purpose of withdrawing blood. Administer medication and immunizations under the direction of the physician or advanced practice provider. May authorize prescription refills and provide prescription information to pharmacies ordered and authorized by a physician or advanced practice provider. Administer first aid or cardiopulmonary resuscitation in an emergency. Prepare and clean exam/procedure rooms, instruments and equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control. Ensure instruments are cleaned and sterilized and contaminated supplies are properly disposed. Prepare orders, sort, store, and restock supplies for exam/procedure room. Duties may include ordering and maintaining stock of supplies. Provide patient education and instructions under the authorization of the supervising physician. Perform other duties as assigned or requested. Education and Training Requirements Required – High School Diploma or Equivalent Preferred – Technical Degree or Diploma, Medical Assistant Work Experience Requirements Required – Medical Assistant or similar, 3–5 years Licenses and Certifications Requirements Required – HEARTSAVER – American Heart Association Required – NCCT Medical Assistant – National Center for Competency Testing Preferred – AMT Registered Medical Assistant – American Medical Technologists Preferred – Certified Clinical Medical Assistant – National Healthcareer Association Preferred – Nationally Certified Medical Assistant – National Association of Health Professionals Preferred – AAMA Certified Medical Assistant – The American Association of Medical Assistants Preferred – BASIC LIFE SUPPORT – American Heart Association Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work with patients, patient families and physicians in a tactful and professional manner. Satisfactorily complete applicable competency assessments and skills checklist for Level2; demonstrate proficiency in all measured areas. Ability to begin the patient visit with eye contact, smile and greeting, while using the patient’s name. Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team. Successful completion of assigned training and development programs for the role within the mandated time frame. Perform computer skills demonstrated by successful navigation of the EMR with appropriate documentation. Demonstrate ability to review computer reports following evidence‑based guidelines. Demonstrated proficiency in motivational interviewing and teach‑back method techniques. Ability to act quickly in emergency situations. Supervision Provided by this Position There are no supervisory or lead responsibilities assigned to this position. Physical Demands The physical activities of this position may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion. Must have good balance and coordination. The physical requirements of this position are: medium work – exerting up to 50 lb. of force occasionally and/or up to 25 lb. of force frequently. The Associate is required to have close visual acuity including color, depth perception, and field of vision to perform an activity, such as assessing patients, preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; or extensive reading.
