Description The Prince George's County Department of Parks and Recreation Southern Region Parks Division seeks an experienced Trails Maintenance Leader - CDL (Parks/Facilities Maintenance Leader - CDL) to work within our Trails Program working in the Bock Road Maintenance Facility in Fort Washington, Maryland. This position will perform Trails maintenance and renovation tasks in our parks throughout the southern portion of Prince George’s County. The successful candidate will perform a variety of trail management tasks such as large equipment operation, mowing, pest scouting and control, and vegetation control. The ideal candidate should possess leadership and supervisors skills with knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office for administrative tasks as well as skills to operate trucks, tractors with attachments, large riding mowers, loaders, forklifts, and other such equipment. Incumbents in this class are regularly given independent work assignments but may work as part of a group. Performs other related duties as assigned. This position will have a work schedule of Monday-Friday from 6:00am – 2:45pm but maybe subject to change based on program needs. Examples of Important Duties Provide leadership and coordination of the Trails Team and development and communication work assignments. Perform skilled maintenance of grounds management to include turfgrass, disease scouting, weed and disease control, turfgrass striping, and minor tree limbing. Plans work and receive work orders, drawings, and plans. Estimates and orders supplies and materials needed for work and crew assignments, sets priorities for workers to complete assignments on time and accurately and identifies and corrects problems as needed. Conducts inspection of park property for safety purposes. Leads and directs workers to accomplish established work programs and corrects problems. Oversees maintenance and renovation contractors and documents contract compliance. As directed by supervisor, maintains, prepares, and initiates records. Keeps inventory and supply records. Participate in investigations and write reports of accidents, injuries and equipment damage. Submits routine and special reports connected with facilities and programs. Collect and enter data into the Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) system and enter work order completion forms. Leads workers on landscaping, trails maintenance and turf maintenance projects. May operate tractors, backhoes and other medium to heavy equipment to perform difficult projects. Resolves customer complaints. Maintains trails and surrounding park property grounds according to established standards. Utilize Commercial Driver’s License to perform park maintenance tasks. Ensure staff utilize proper safety equipment. Train reporting staff in the proper method and safety involving assigned tasks. Maintain and ensure inventory is accurate to maintain equipment, parks, and facilities within our division. Snow removal and other weather-related duties. Lead and monitor Park/Facilities Maintenance Workers with day-to-day job duties, general park maintenance, program support, playgrounds, snow removal, athletic field and trails maintenance. Complete work orders and submit to Park Manager daily. Utilize EAM (work order tracking system) to book labor and provide necessary details. Clears brush, prunes deadwood, and cuts down small trees. Important Work Characteristics Knowledge of, and skill in groundskeeping; trails and turf maintenance; landscaping; maintenance practices, products and equipment; basic automobile and equipment maintenance; park operations and maintenance; pesticide and fertilizer application; safety techniques, procedures and requirements; tree maintenance and removal. Knowledge of, and skill in assigning or reviewing tasks, setting the pace, and otherwise assisting the supervisor by performing group leader work or ability to rapidly acquire knowledge and skill set. Skill and ability to lead maintenance workers in various park or general maintenance activities and projects. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or Certificate of General Educational Development (GED). Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in ground maintenance, golf course maintenance, building maintenance or park maintenance. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total five (5) years. Valid driver's license in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations. Driver’s license must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions, or points that could limit the employee’s ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required by the position of assignment. Pass Commission medical examination. Depending upon an assignment, positions in this class may require within 12 months of hire (a) Commercial driver’s license with appropriate endorsements; (b) obtainment of certifications including: Maryland Department of Agriculture’s Pesticide Applicator certification in the categories appropriate to the work assignment; Maryland Department of Agriculture’s Professional Fertilizer Applicator certification; and National Playground Safety Institute certification. Supplemental Information Classification Specification: Parks/Facilities Maintenance Leader-CDL/PAC Preferred Qualifications Three years of experience in grounds maintenance industry with heavy equipment to facilitate maintenance and renovations. Three years’ experience working in the Trails or Grounds Management Industry. Strong work ethic with the ability to independently lead a team. Class A CDL to transport crew members and/or equipment to successfully perform work program responsibilities. May be subject to medical, drug and alcohol testing.
