We are seeking an Equipment Service Worker who thrives in a fast-paced environment and enjoys hands-on work. In this role, you will:

• Perform basic servicing and maintenance on automotive and heavy-duty equipment
• Fuel and service coaches daily
• Assist mechanics as needed
• Complete shop tasks typical of an equipment repair environment
• Maintain accurate shop and service records

You may work on gasoline-powered vehicles, hybrid and diesel coaches, electric trolleys and buses, and other motorized or auxiliary equipment. A minimum of one year of professional or personal experience performing similar tasks is required.

Safety Sensitive Position

This position is considered safety sensitive. Applicants for positions defined as safety sensitive are required to undergo drug testing prior to employment, and subsequent to commencement of employment, will be subject to random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, return to duty and follow-up drug and alcohol testing in compliance with Federal DOT alcohol and controlled substances testing program protocols.

Vacancy Information

This recruitment will be used to fill multiple term-limited temporary (TLT) and special duty assignment (SDA) vacancies in the Transit Equipment Service Worker classification. An eligibility list for future career service, TLT, and/or SDA vacancies will be created to fill future career service, TLT, and/or SDA vacancies as they become available in this classification and workgroup. If created, the eligibility list would be active for 12 months from the posting date, and may be utilized at the discretion of the hiring authority.

Although initial vacancies are temporary in duration, these are full-time, fully-benefitted positions that may have the opportunity to convert to career service (permanent) positions, when possible. Vehicle Maintenance invests heavily in its staff's development, and SDA/TLT positions give candidates a chance to gain knowledge, skills, and experiences that can be applied to future opportunities.

Job Duties

Applying equity and social justice principles is a daily responsibility and a foundational expectation for all King County employees. In this role, you will apply equity and social justice principles that exemplify shared values, behaviors, and practices to all aspects of the work.

• Fuel and clean transit buses to be placed in daily service, check tires and fluid levels, and report defects.
• Lubricate all types of automotive equipment including automobiles, trucks, and heavy equipment.
• Inspect automotive equipment for servicing needs.
• Service equipment with fuel, oil, water and air.
• Observe and report mechanical and other defects.
• Clean and wash equipment and parts, including operating high pressure steam cleaning equipment on vehicles and parts.
• Complete minor repairs (tighten mirrors, swipe arms.)
• Change oil and filters.
• Clean and wash equipment.
• Attach and remove snow chains.
• Park and deliver motor vehicles. Direct all types of vehicles to parking stalls.
• Assist in cleaning shops and work areas.
• Clean and care for tools.
• Assist in minor storekeeping duties.
• Keep routine records of tank gauge readings, supplies used, vehicle numbers and routine servicing activities.
• Input or extract data using a computer as required, including preparing required reports as needed.
• Use maintenance charts and manuals as needed.
• Clean and maintain chemical balance in hot tanks and deliver cleaned parts to proper locations.
• May be required to pick up or deliver parts as needed between bases.
• Perform other related duties as assigned, including but not limited to related accessory maintenance tasks, and assisting mechanics as needed.

Physical Requirements

The job requires a range of physical skills normally associated with automotive service and maintenance activities including standing, bending, crouching, kneeling, crawling, reaching, twisting, and the operation of foot controls while driving. Continuous hand and finger manipulations are required. Probing, dumping and inserting fare boxes into their receive bins involves pushing and pulling, bending and crouching, and ability to lift up to 50 pounds (this includes full fare box cash boxes as well as automotive parts.)

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

At a minimum to qualify for this position you will need: One year of professional or personal automotive equipment servicing experience OR graduation from an accredited pre-apprenticeship program for the trades is required. Experience may include professional or personal experience. Additional minimum requirements Include:

• Proficiency in the use of personal computers and software programs to enter and extract information from automated vehicle maintenance systems and related software applications.

Necessary Special Requirements:

• All applicants must be 18 years old at time of application.
• Must pass drug and alcohol testing provision for safety-sensitive positions as required by the U.S. Department of Transportation, 49 CFR Parts 40 and 655.
• Must pass post-offer, pre-employment physical.
• A valid Washington State Driver License and acceptable driving record.
• Within 90 days of hire, a candidate must be able to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) with a passenger endorsement, and with the air brake restriction removed. All candidates without a current CDL must have a Class B Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP), with correct endorsement and restriction removed, prior to receiving a formal offer. After hire, King County Metro Transit will provide you with paid training, on our equipment, so that you can obtain a Class B CDL, which is required for this position.
