Native American Transformer Services, Inc. (NTS) is a Native American-owned power transformer field services company headquartered in Reno, Nevada, with a national project footprint. NTS keeps critical grid infrastructure running through transformer testing, maintenance, repair, and engineering services for utility and industrial clients across the country.

NTS is hiring a Protection Engineer to own protection and control engineering support for high voltage power transformers. This role designs, analyzes, and troubleshoots protective relay schemes, supports field commissioning and testing, and helps ensure NTS's protection engineering work meets utility and industry standards. It's a strong fit for an engineer who wants direct ownership of protection scope on a growing, field-focused engineering team.

Key Responsibilities

•         Design, specify, and review protective relay schemes for high voltage power transformers, substations, and associated equipment

•         Perform protective relay coordination studies, short circuit analysis, and arc flash hazard studies

•         Develop, calculate, and document relay protection settings for transformer differential, overcurrent, and other protection functions

•         Review one-line diagrams, relay logic, SCADA/control schematics, and protection & control (P&C) drawings for accuracy and compliance

•         Support field commissioning, testing, and troubleshooting of protection and control systems, working directly with field technicians and project teams

•         Investigate protection misoperations and equipment failures; lead root cause analysis and corrective action recommendations

•         Maintain and improve NTS's protection engineering standards, settings templates, and technical documentation

•         Ensure protection designs comply with NERC PRC standards, IEEE/ANSI guidelines, and client/utility-specific requirements

•         Provide technical guidance and mentorship to field technicians and junior engineering staff

•         Travel to project and client sites as needed to support testing, commissioning, and field engineering work

Required Qualifications

•         Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field, or equivalent hands-on experience

•         3-5 years of experience in high voltage transformer protection engineering, protective relaying, or power system protection

•         Hands-on experience with protective relay platforms (e.g., SEL, GE Multilin, Siemens, ABB)

•         Proficiency with relay setting, coordination, or power system analysis software (e.g., AcSELerator, ETAP, Aspen OneLiner, CAPE, or SKM)

•         Working knowledge of protection and control drawings, one-line diagrams, and SCADA/relay logic

•         Familiarity with NERC PRC standards, IEEE C37 series, and utility protection practices

•         Strong analytical, technical writing, and troubleshooting skills

•         Ability to travel to client and project sites nationwide

Preferred Qualifications

•         Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or Professional Engineer (PE) license

•         Experience supporting high voltage power transformer testing, maintenance, or field services

•         Experience with substation automation, SCADA integration, or communications-assisted protection schemes

•         Prior utility, transmission, or field services industry experience

•         Experience mentoring junior engineers or technicians

Compensation, Benefits & Work Environment

Compensation

$95,000-$135,000 annually, based on experience (nationwide average for 3 to 5 years of protection engineering experience, based on national salary data)

Location

Remote (U.S.-based), with regular travel to project sites nationwide (approx. 30-40%)

Senior Electrical Engineer and Engineering Department Manager
