Staff Accountant

Under the direction of the Director of Finance, the Staff Accountant is responsible for assisting in the day to day operations of the business office.

Essential duties and responsibilities include:

• Prepare and post journal entries for payroll, accruals, receipts, reconciliations
• Responsible for student activity funds accounting, reporting and oversight
• Assist with annual financial audit and provide outside auditing firm with documentation, reports, and analyses as needed
• Assist with budget entry and analyses
• Assist with monthly general ledger account reconciliations
• Prepare and record school department bank reconciliation statements
• Assist school staff with trouble shooting financial software, general ledger account coding, purchase requisitions, purchase orders and invoices as needed
• Assist in managing all federal, state, and local grants
• Perform any additional accounting duties as requested by the Director of Finance or Controller to ensure efficient business operations

Knowledge, skills and abilities include:

• Working knowledge of district and school rules, state and federal regulations, and policies applicable to area of assignment
• Ability to work effectively with district personnel, administrators, staff, parents, outside agencies, other school districts, and the community in a confidential manner
• Must be highly detailed and organized
• Ability to act and operate independently with minimal daily direction from manager to accomplish objectives
• Proficiency with email and Microsoft Office, especially Excel
• Government accounting software experience preferred
• Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with all levels of employees, management, and external agencies to maximize performance creativity, problem solving, and results

Minimum qualifications include:

• Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related business field
• One (1) to three (3) years' experience with municipal, non-profit, and/or fund accounting

Preferred qualifications include:

• Experience with Infinite Visions accounting software
• Experience working with the RI Department of Education's Uniform Chart of Accounts (UCOA)

Physical demands include:

• While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to work in a variety of physical positions, including sitting, bending, stretching, standing, and walking
• The employee is regularly required to talk and/or hear
• The employee is frequently required to use hands, handle or feel
• Frequent and repetitive hand and finger movements are required when using writing tools and computers
• The employee must be able to perform physical activities such as, but not limited to, lifting and/or moving objects up to ten (10) pounds
• Specific vision abilities include close vision

Work environment includes:
