Custodian

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Custodian is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, orderliness, and sanitation of the residential facility. This position ensures that all assigned areas are properly cleaned, and that needed repairs are either completed or reported to the agency's maintenance unit. The Custodian works under general supervision, receives specific instructions as needed, and may have work inspected upon completion.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

1. Remains alert during working hours; attends work as scheduled and complies with attendance policies.

1. Completes a daily walk through of assigned areas of responsibilities.

1. Performs routine facility custodial duties. Initiates work orders for more complex facility repairs. Works directly with maintenance staff to develop a plan/prioritization of maintenance projects.

1. Initiates cleaning details. May work with security officers to assign work details to offenders. Supervises the completion of cleaning details, including offender dorms, bathrooms, laundry rooms, TV rooms, common areas, hallways, and stairways.

1. Maintains a daily sanitation and maintenance log, documenting completed tasks, and submits the log to the Facility Director weekly.

1. Completes regularly scheduled floor maintenance to include waxing of all tiled floors and steam cleaning of carpeted areas as necessary.

1. Vacuums weekly and remove trash three (3) times weekly from all staff offices.

1. Ensures that all cleaning supplies, chemicals, and equipment are stored safely and securely in accordance with agency policies and safety regulations.

1. Monitors inventory of custodial supplies and notifies the Facility Director or maintenance unit when replenishment is needed.

1. Sets up and breaks down rooms or common areas for meetings, groups, or facility activities as requested.

1. Assists with snow removal, salting walkways, or clearing debris from entrances as needed.

1. Follows all safety protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) when required.

1. Participates in required training, including safety, infection control, and facility procedures.

1. Maintains a professional and respectful demeanor when interacting with residents, staff, and visitors.

1. Maintains the confidentiality of information appropriately.

1. Complies with Code of Conduct and reports of violations immediately.

1. Performs other duties as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

• Knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment used in housekeeping/custodial work
• Ability to understand and follow instruction
• Ability to perform a variety of routine manual tasks requiring the exertion of physical strength in the care, cleaning, and general maintenance of a building and equipment
• Ability to communicate effectively
• Ability to perform elementary/basic work/tasks in a variety of building trades.
• Ability to operate a motor vehicle and/or motorized equipment when necessary
• Knowledge of safe cleaning practices, including proper handling, storage, and disposal of cleaning chemicals
• Knowledge of basic OSHA safety standards and infection-control procedures
• Physical ability to lift, carry, push, and pull objects up to a reasonable weight as required for custodial tasks
• Ability to bend, stoop, climb ladders, and stand for extended periods
• Ability to maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment
• Ability to work outdoors under varying weather conditions as necessary to perform duties

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS

1. Possession of a high school diploma or GED;


AND

2. One (1) or more years of work experience in custodial or maintenance trade.

NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS

• All candidates will be required to submit to a background screening. No candidate may be considered for employment who is under the supervision of the Federal, State, County or Municipal Corrections Department nor have any pending felony or misdemeanor charges other than minor traffic charges.

• Driving may be required for this position. The successful candidate must have and remain in possession of a valid current driver's license, automobile insurance, and be insurable under the agency's motor vehicle insurance policy.
• All candidates for employment must meet the established minimum qualifications for employment as identified by the applicable regulatory agencies.

This position is classified as at-will, meaning employment may be ended by either party at any time, with or without cause or notice, as allowed by law.
