Assistant Golf Course Superintendent

Overview:

The assistant superintendent is an integral part of the maintenance team at La Costa and is involved in all aspects of the golf course maintenance operation. This position is an excellent opportunity for a progressive learner with a background or education in turf management. The assistant superintendent will play an active role in implementing daily maintenance operations. The assistant superintendent monitors the turf's overall health and reports any issues to the superintendent and director of agronomy. The assistant superintendent will have golf knowledge and a passion for excelling in the turf management industry. Responsibilities:
• Assist with planning and supervising daily golf course maintenance, including mowing, irrigation, fertilization, pesticide application, cultivation, seeding, pruning, drainage, bunker care, and other turf and ornamental practices.
• Assess course conditions and operational priorities each day and adjust work schedules based on weather, play, staffing, and agronomic needs.
• Direct, train, and support associates in safe work practices, quality standards, equipment operation and care, chemical handling, and efficient completion of assigned work.
• Supervise and participate in maintenance of greens, tees, fairways, roughs, cart paths, landscaped areas, pumps, wells, irrigation controls, and drainage systems.
• Identify turfgrass diseases, weeds, insects, nutrient deficiencies, and other plant health concerns; promptly report findings to the Golf Course Superintendent and assist with corrective actions prescribed by the Superintendent.
• Under the Superintendent's direction, calibrate application equipment and apply fertilizers and plant-protection products in accordance with labels, regulations, and established procedures.
• Operate, monitor, and help maintain irrigation systems and field controllers; use weather information and soil-moisture readings to support efficient water management.
• Coordinate the proper use, inspection, cleaning, maintenance, repair, and inventory of golf course equipment, vehicles, tools, chemicals, and supplies.
• Assist with personnel administration, associate safety, performance feedback, discipline, and cost control as assigned.
• Assist with reviewing operating procedures and identifying opportunities to improve course quality, productivity, consistency, safety, and cost efficiency.
• Communicate course conditions, maintenance activities, and operational needs with the Superintendent and other appropriate staff.
• Oversee daily maintenance operations in the Superintendent's absence and promptly communicate significant course, weather, irrigation, safety, or staffing issues.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.


Qualifications:
• Associate degree in Turfgrass Management, Agronomy, Horticulture, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and golf course maintenance experience.
• At least two years of progressively responsible golf course maintenance experience, preferably experience directing or supervising a team.
• Valid driver's license.
• Current pesticide applicator license for the state of employment, or the ability to obtain the required license within 90 days of employment.
• Experience with the turfgrass species and growing conditions relevant to the location is preferred.
• Spanish-language skills are a plus.
• Working knowledge of golf course turf maintenance; soils and soil conditioners; fertilizers; herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides; planting and care of trees, shrubs, and ornamentals; and irrigation and drainage systems.
• Ability to recognize and accurately report common turf and plant health problems and assist with treatments prescribed by the Golf Course Superintendent.
• Ability to schedule and supervise work, use labor and equipment efficiently, provide clear instructions, and maintain effective associate and public relations.
• Ability to prepare clear reports and maintain complete, accurate operational and regulatory records.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and relevant purchasing, payroll, irrigation-control, and maintenance-record systems, or the ability to learn them.
• Sound judgment, dependable follow-through, and the ability to follow established standards and direction.


Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
The position performs both outdoor and indoor work. Outdoor work occurs in varied and sometimes inclement weather. Indoor work includes equipment maintenance, planning, record keeping, and office duties. Work schedules vary according to golf course and weather conditions.
• Regularly stand and walk for extended periods and frequently stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, reach, and perform repetitive tasks.
• Frequently lift, carry, push, or move materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, with assistance when appropriate.
• Safely operate vehicles, turf equipment, hand tools, and application equipment and work near moving machinery, chemicals, dust, noise, and uneven terrain.
