Job Description

The Compounding Pharmacy Technician prepares and compounds customized medications in a highly regulated pharmacy environment, supporting both sterile and non-sterile production. This role focuses on staging and preparing components for drug production in a clean-room setting, compounding low- to high-risk sterile products, and filling patient orders under the supervision of a pharmacist. The technician follows established Standard Operating Procedures, maintains strict quality and safety standards, and ensures that all compounded medications meet potency, purity, integrity, sterility, and accuracy requirements.

Responsibilities

• Follow all applicable Standard Operating Procedures related to sterile and non-sterile compounding, safety, and quality control.
• Perform non-sterile compounding of medications, including capsules, liquids, topical preparations, nasal preparations, suppositories, troches, and tablet triturates.
• Conduct sterile compounding of medications, including injections, ophthalmic solutions, and inhalation solutions, ensuring standards for sterility and endotoxin content are consistently met.
• Carry out sterile-to-sterile transfers, packaging, and labeling of one or more drugs in accordance with regulatory and internal quality requirements.
• Stage and prepare all components for drug production in a clean-room environment, ensuring materials are correct, available, and properly documented.
• Compound medications, fill and label prescriptions, and pre-package bulk compounded medications in anticipation of prescription orders.
• Monitor inventory levels, identify low, expiring, or expired chemicals and compounds, and initiate re-order processes as needed.
• Receive new inventory, verify accuracy, and maintain required documentation such as Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and Certificates of Analysis.
• Access and review MSDS information when working with hazardous or non-hazardous chemicals to ensure proper handling and safety practices.
• Perform environmental monitoring and validation testing according to established policies and procedures to maintain a compliant compounding environment.
• Support daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning of the compounding and clean-room areas using appropriate disinfectants and techniques.
• Maintain high standards of accuracy, potency, quality, purity, integrity, sterility, and endotoxin content for all compounded products.
• Work quickly and accurately under time and volume constraints while maintaining meticulous attention to detail.
• Collaborate closely with supervising pharmacists and other pharmacy staff to ensure safe and timely preparation of patient medications.
• Complete initial and ongoing competency evaluations as required by policies and procedures to maintain authorization to perform compounding activities.
• Perform data entry related to prescriptions, inventory, and production records with a focus on accuracy and compliance.
• Support inventory accuracy through cycle counts and participation in supply chain and production planning activities.
• Assist with medication refill processes and patient order fulfillment, as authorized and under pharmacist supervision.
• Provide professional customer service in interactions related to pharmacy services, as appropriate to the setting.
• Carry out other duties, responsibilities, and qualifications as assigned to support pharmacy operations and patient care.

Essential Skills

• Registration with the State Board of Pharmacy as required for pharmacy technicians.
• Pharmacy technician certification (e.g., CPhT) and current pharmacy technician license, as applicable.
• Strong aseptic technique and excellent hand-eye coordination for sterile compounding tasks.
• Demonstrated ability to work quickly and accurately under time and volume constraints.
• High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
• Knowledge of pharmacy operations and compounding processes, including sterile and non-sterile techniques.
• Ability to follow detailed Standard Operating Procedures and comply with regulatory and quality standards.
• High level of attention to detail to consistently meet standards for potency, quality, purity, integrity, sterility, endotoxin content, and accuracy.
• Competence in inventory management, including monitoring stock levels and identifying expiring or expired materials.
• Basic data entry skills for recording prescriptions, inventory transactions, and production information.
• Ability to work effectively under the supervision of a pharmacist in a collaborative pharmacy team.
• Strong commitment to patient safety, product quality, and compliance with compounding regulations.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience in a hospital pharmacy, retail pharmacy, or inpatient pharmacy setting.
• Experience in compounding pharmacy operations, including low- to high-risk sterile product preparation.
• Familiarity with IV preparation and handling of injectable medications.
• Experience with medication refill processes and prior authorization procedures.
• Knowledge of production planning, inventory accuracy, and supply chain management in a healthcare or pharmacy environment.
• Customer service skills for interacting with patients, caregivers, or healthcare professionals.
• Experience working in health care environments where accuracy, safety, and regulatory compliance are critical.
• Ability to participate in cycle counts and support continuous improvement in inventory control.
• Comfort working in a fast-paced, regulated environment with frequent collaboration across pharmacy and quality teams.

Work Environment

This role is based in a highly regulated compounding pharmacy environment focused on preparing customized medications for patients. Work is performed in a clean-room and laboratory-style setting, with strict adherence to sterile and non-sterile compounding procedures. The position requires the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), which may include gowns, gloves, masks, hair coverings, and other protective attire appropriate to handling hazardous and non-hazardous chemicals. Employees work closely with pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and quality teams in a collaborative, fast-paced environment dedicated to patient safety and product quality. The workplace emphasizes accuracy, attention to detail, and compliance with policies, procedures, and regulatory standards, and involves routine environmental monitoring, validation testing, and scheduled cleaning activities using appropriate disinfectants and techniques.

This is a Contract position based out of Lake Mary, FL.

The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $22.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
