Staff Mechanical Design Engineer - Instruments
Intuitive Surgical
Staff-level mechanical design engineer position leading instrument development for minimally invasive surgical devices. Role involves designing, testing, and validating new and existing products while coordinating across manufacturing, systems, and clinical teams at this medical device company.
Responsibilities
- Lead design efforts to optimize performance, manufacturability, and reliability of surgical instruments
- Conduct failure mode analysis, create specifications, and perform component verification and product validation testing
- Work cross-functionally with manufacturing, systems, and clinical teams on design development
- Develop vendor relationships and initial assembly fixtures; troubleshoot manufacturing and design defects
- Investigate root causes of design and manufacturing issues; develop and document corrective solutions
Requirements
- 12+ years mechanical engineering experience with Bachelor's degree, or 8+ years with Master's degree
- Proficiency with CAD software, SolidWorks preferred, for mechanism design and documentation
- Mechanical analysis skills including FEA, statics, materials, and stress analysis
- Knowledge of component manufacturing processes: injection molding, machining, MIM, heat treatment
- Strong communication and documentation capabilities
- Experience with small mechanism design, plastics, and medical device products preferred
- Design experience in regulated industries with mission-critical applications desired
