After School Counselor Fleetwood Jourdain JobID: 1058 Position Type: Parks, Recreation & Community Services - Seasonal Date Posted: 8/8/2024 Location: Fleetwood-Jourdain Center Description After School Counselors are responsible for leading and implementing games, sports, arts & crafts and recreational activities for campers in a group setting. As an After School Counselor, you will communicate directly with the Coordinator, Lead Counselor, and any other counselors with any suggestions, comments, concerns or ideas. The After School Counselor is responsible for the safety of campers while in camp at all times, including field trips and anything directly related to camp activities. It is required for all employees to report any accidents/ incidents to the Program Coordinator, immediately followed by completing the proper paperwork for documentation. Every counselor is expected to be a role model to campers and exhibit constructive and inclusive participation for all camp participants. It is the duty of the counselor to come to work daily with a positive attitude and be ready to make camp a safe, enjoyable and fun atmosphere for all that attend. Complete all appropriate trainings Read and follow updated policies and procedures Communicate any concerns or issues directly to the Program Coordinator Get to know and work cooperatively with camp and building staff Employee should have the ability to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly, in addition to the ability to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Have the ability to lift, reach, kneel, bend, stand for long periods of time, talk, hear, feel, smell, climb, maintain balance, stoop, crouch, crawl, and see the nature of the object by the eye. There are no environmental hazards associated with this classification. Job Summary Show maturity and skills needed to perform the job successfully Has a desire to work with children Willing to fulfill and pursue the goals of the camp/follow camp handbook Work directly with Coordinator/Lead Counselor when coordinating activities Makes every effort to be a leader not only to the campers, but peers as well Capable of assisting with camper discipline and emergency situations Follow daily/weekly schedules Inform/communicate with the Coordinator/Lead Counselor of any incidents/accidents or emergencies Notify Coordinator if he/she will be absent or late for work Report to work/meetings and from scheduled breaks on time Ensure the safety of all children during the camp day Encourage participation, teamwork from campers Reports/fills out incident and accident forms properly Has a positive, creative attitude Willing to run, jump, get dirty, engage with campers during camp days Complete/attend required trainings prior to start date Group supervision of campers with attention to all of the following: program, health, happiness, discipline, cleanliness, safety, routine duties, character and skill development Lead indoor and outdoor recreational activities Assist participants in a variety of recreational programs including arts and crafts, field trips, games and sports Plan and provide instruction of a variety of recreational activities that are age-appropriate activities suitable to individual group interests, needs and capabilities Promote camper participation in all activities Set a good example in all you do at camp Responsible to be aware of your campers medical needs Responsible for maintaining a positive attitude and refraining from behavior that is detrimental to the staff team and staff morale Work with the camp counselors and directors to iron out issues with facilities, programs and campers Provide public relations/customer service to parents/guardians to ensure a positive impression of our camps Responsible for reporting your own health concerns- ill/exhaustion to your specific Director Under the guidance of your Lead Counselor or Coordinator enforcement of policies and rules Maintain, inventory and care for equipment and supplies (If you use it – put it back, if it’s broken or unsafe – report it to the directors) Possess good judgment and willingness to accept responsibilities Perform other related work as assigned by Coordinator or Director Qualifications Minimum age of 16 years old Strong interest, maturity and judgment in working with children in an outdoor setting Knowledge and experience in camp related activities preferred Possess the ability to work as a team member with other counselors and senior staff members Responsible, friendly, enthusiastic, patient and willing to learn Rate Starting at $14-$15 hourly Schedule This is a part‑time, seasonal after school position. Schedule includes weekdays, Monday‑Friday after school and school days out. Working hours are 2:30 pm‑6 pm and full 8‑hour days on school days out. Work location: Fleetwood Jourdain.
