Overview

The Concrete Groundman supports excavation, site preparation, and structural concrete construction for electrical substations and critical power-distribution infrastructure. Working as part of a field crew, this position assists with the construction of drilled piers, equipment foundations, slabs and mats, stairs, cast-in-place retaining walls, and other structural concrete components required for substation projects.

This position requires a strong commitment to safety, quality, teamwork, and precision while working in active and complex substation environments.

Responsibilities

At J.J. Barney Construction, you will have responsibilities based on the construction project’s needs, but they will typically include, but may not be limited to:

• Assist with the construction of drilled piers, structural foundations, equipment pads, slabs/mats, stairs, and cast-in-place retaining walls for electrical substations.
• Assist with excavation, trenching, grading, backfilling, and site preparation associated with substation foundations and infrastructure.
• Assist with setting, assembling, bracing, and stripping concrete forms.
• Assist with the placement of reinforcing steel, anchor bolts, embeds, and other components required for concrete structures.
• Prepare foundations and work areas for concrete placement and assist with concrete pours, consolidation, screeding, finishing, and curing.
• Assist with layout, elevations, and measurements to ensure concrete structures are installed to required locations and tolerances.
• Safely use and maintain hand and power tools required to perform assigned work.
• Safely work around underground utilities, grounding grids, electrical infrastructure, excavations, and other substation hazards.
• Follow project drawings, specifications, safety procedures, utility requirements, and direction from the Foreman and field leadership.
• Maintain a safe, clean, and organized jobsite while working collaboratively with crew members and other trades to meet project schedules and quality expectations.

Experience and Skills Required:

• Previous concrete, excavation, civil construction, utility, or substation experience preferred.
• Experience with concrete foundations, forming, reinforcing steel, concrete placement, or excavation preferred.
• Ability to work safely in electrical substation and utility construction environments.
• Ability to read and follow basic construction plans, measurements, and field instructions.
• Ability to safely use common construction hand and power tools.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to work within required elevations, locations, and tolerances.
• Dependable, safety-focused, and willing to learn.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a field construction crew.
• Ability and willingness to travel to project locations, including extended travel and overnight stays, as required.
