Crean Lutheran High School - Irvine, CA 92618 Overview Salary Range $22.00 - $25.00 Hourly Description The Transportation Specialist supports Crean Lutheran High School by ensuring the safe, efficient, and reliable transportation of students and the responsible stewardship of school-owned vehicles. While the individual in this role is the primary party responsible for driving the school’s shuttle bus, the role also includes indirect transportation responsibilities, including coordination of transportation logistics, scheduling, and fleet maintenance. This position plays a critical role in supporting student programs, athletics, and school operations by ensuring that transportation systems operate smoothly and safely, aligned with the school’s mission. The Transportation Specialist reports to the Director of Facilities and contributes to operational excellence through proactive planning, communication, and attention to detail. A valid California Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Passenger Endorsement is required. The Transportation Specialist must obtain and maintain a valid School Pupil Activity Bus (SPAB) Driver Certificate issued by the California Highway Patrol (CHP), maintain a valid Medical Examiner’s Certificate (DOT physical), current First Aid certification, and a clean driving record, and successfully complete all required background clearances, including DOJ fingerprinting and CHP authorization. This role supports the day-to-day execution of the school’s transportation program, ensuring compliance with applicable laws, safety standards, and operational expectations. ROLE AND FUNCTION, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (Specific) Licensing, Certification, and Regulatory Compliance Maintain all required licenses, endorsements, and certifications necessary for vehicle operation; Maintain a valid DOT Medical Examiner’s Certificate and comply with all medical requirements for commercial drivers; Participate in required drug and alcohol testing programs in accordance with federal and state regulations; Maintain a safe driving record and participate in the DMV Employer Pull Notice (EPN) program; Complete all required safety training and comply with applicable California laws and school transportation policies; Maintain current First Aid and CPR certification. Transportation Operations Safely operate school vehicles, including shuttle buses and vans, in compliance with all applicable laws and safety standards; Transport students, staff, and groups to and from designated locations and school events; Conduct and document pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections to ensure safety, compliance, and operational readiness; Maintain a high standard of student supervision and safety during all transportation activities; Maintain accurate student rosters and accountability for all transportation activities; Adhere to all licensing, certification, and health requirements necessary for vehicle operation. Transportation Coordination Coordinate with the Director of Facilities regarding transportation priorities, vendor selection, and scheduling decisions requiring approval; Coordinate transportation schedules for school activities, including athletics, field trips, and special events; Collaborate with departments to assess transportation needs and develop efficient scheduling solutions; Communicate transportation plans clearly to staff, coaches, and program leaders; Support contingency planning for transportation changes or unexpected needs; Maintain transportation calendars, schedules, and usage records. Fleet Management & Vehicle Stewardship Oversee the maintenance and care of school-owned vehicles, including vans and buses; Coordinate routine maintenance, inspections, and repairs with vendors and service providers; Track vehicle maintenance schedules, service records, and compliance requirements; Monitor vehicle condition and proactively address issues to ensure safety and longevity; Maintain vehicle inspection logs, pre-trip and post-trip inspection records, and maintenance documentation in accordance with CHP requirements; Coordinate annual CHP inspections and ensure all vehicles meet SPAB certification standards; Monitor vehicle safety equipment (first aid kits, fire extinguishers, emergency exits, seat belts) to ensure compliance; Track preventative maintenance schedules and ensure timely repairs to maintain safety and regulatory compliance; Support budgeting awareness by communicating maintenance needs and cost considerations. Compliance & Safety Adhere to regulated driving time limits and safety protocols designed to prevent driver fatigue and ensure student safety; Ensure all transportation activities comply with California laws, school policies, and safety regulations; Maintain required licenses, certifications, and medical clearances; Support vehicle documentation, registration, and inspection compliance; Ensure all vehicle maintenance records, inspection logs, and safety equipment meet CHP and SPAB compliance standards; Follow established accident and incident reporting procedures, including documentation and timely communication with appropriate school leadership; Promote a culture of safety in all transportation-related operations. Responds effectively to changing schedules and operational needs. Physical Requirements While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear, and see. The role requires the ability to sit for extended periods while driving and to operate vehicles safely and effectively. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk across the campus; use hands to handle tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs or ladders; and stoop, kneel, or bend. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to approximately 25 pounds and perform inspections and basic physical tasks related to vehicle oversight. Additionally, the employee must be able to read and prepare documents, observe conditions requiring maintenance, and effectively direct others in carrying out tasks. Work is performed both on campus and off-site in indoor and outdoor settings and in all weather conditions (including heat, cold, and rain). The role includes operating vehicles in various traffic and weather conditions and interacting regularly with students, faculty, staff, parents, and vendors. The position requires flexibility, responsiveness, and the ability to manage changing priorities, frequent interruptions, and evolving institutional needs. Evening and weekend work may be required to support school events and activities. The noise level ranges from quiet (in an office environment) to loud (during large events), and the role involves consistent interaction across the school community while maintaining adaptability in a dynamic environment.
