Tier 2 Math and Literacy Interventionist River Valley Charter School - Newburyport, Massachusetts Job Details Job ID: 5866472 Application Deadline: Posted until filled Posted: Aug 03, 2026 12:00 AM (UTC) Starting Date: Aug 24, 2026 Job Description Reports To: Director of Special Education and Student Services FLSA Status: Exempt Position Purpose: The Interventionist is responsible for providing targeted, data-driven academic support to students who need additional instruction to meet grade-level expectations. This role leads Tier 2 intervention systems within the school, delivers high-impact small-group instruction (primarily in literacy and/or math), and partners with teachers to strengthen core instruction. The Interventionist ensures that interventions accelerate student learning while maintaining alignment to the Montessori model and preserving student access to the core classroom experience. Core Responsibilities Provide small-group and occasional 1:1 instruction in targeted skill areas (primarily literacy and/or math) Deliver structured, evidence-based literacy instruction grounded in foundational reading skills (e.g., phonics, fluency, comprehension), and/or targeted math intervention as needed Use short-cycle, high-impact instructional approaches with clear goals and measurable outcomes Adapt instructional approaches and materials to support diverse learners Reinforce foundational skills that enable students to access core Montessori work Support development of student independence, confidence, and persistence Ensure intervention time is purposeful, efficient, and maximizes instructional impact Student Identification and Progress Monitoring Use assessment data to identify students in need of Tier 2 support Progress monitor student growth frequently and adjust instruction based on data Maintain clear, organized records of student participation, progress, and outcomes Use both formal and informal data to evaluate intervention effectiveness Apply clear entry and exit criteria for intervention groups based on student performance Support early identification of students who may require more intensive services MTSS/SST and Tiered Support Systems Lead or co-lead Tier 2 intervention systems within the school Design, implement, and monitor intervention plans aligned to student needs Use data to determine student placement, grouping, and instructional focus Progress monitor students regularly and make data-based decisions about continuation, adjustment, or exit from intervention Contribute data and recommendations during MTSS/SST meetings Collaborate with the Special Education team to support identification of students who may require more intensive services Ensure strong alignment and coherence across tiers of support Collaboration with Classroom Teachers Partner closely with lead teachers to align intervention with classroom instruction Co-plan or consult to ensure consistency in strategies and expectations Share progress data and instructional insights to inform classroom practice Support differentiation within the classroom when appropriate Ensure intervention supports—but does not replace—core instruction Maintain clear alignment and distinction between intervention services and special education services Instructional Leadership and Teacher Support Serve as a resource for teachers on effective literacy and intervention strategies Model lessons and instructional practices when appropriate Support teachers in analyzing student data and identifying instructional next steps Partner with teachers to strengthen Tier 1 instruction, particularly in foundational skill development Contribute to building schoolwide understanding of effective intervention practices Family Partnership and Communication (as appropriate) Communicate with families about student progress in coordination with lead teachers Support family understanding of intervention goals and strategies when needed Professional Practice and Growth Engage in ongoing professional learning related to intervention, assessment, content, and Montessori practice Participate actively in coaching, observation, and feedback cycles Collaborate with colleagues to improve instructional practice and student outcomes Reflect on practice and implement feedback to improve effectiveness Uphold all school policies, procedures, and professional expectations Essential Functions Providing targeted small-group and individualized academic intervention aligned to identified student needs and grade-level expectations Delivering evidence-based intervention instruction in literacy, math, and/or other targeted academic areas using structured, data-driven approaches Monitoring student progress regularly and using assessment data to adjust instructional strategies, grouping, and intervention plans Maintaining accurate, organized, and timely records related to student participation, assessment data, progress monitoring, and intervention outcomes Supporting implementation and continuous improvement of Tier 2 intervention systems and MTSS/SST processes Collaborating effectively with lead teachers, special education staff, instructional leaders, and families to support student growth and instructional alignment Supporting differentiation and alignment between intervention services and core classroom instruction Assisting in identifying students who may require more intensive interventions or additional support services Modeling instructional strategies and supporting staff understanding of intervention practices when appropriate Managing multiple student groups, instructional priorities, data cycles, and progress-monitoring timelines simultaneously Communicating clearly and professionally regarding student progress, instructional recommendations, and intervention plans Participating in meetings, professional development, coaching cycles, and other assigned responsibilities Performing duties that require frequent movement throughout the school building and active engagement with students Qualifications Bachelor’s degree required (Master’s preferred) Massachusetts educator licensure (or ability to obtain) Experience providing targeted academic interventions, particularly in literacy Strong knowledge of foundational reading instruction (e.g., phonics, fluency, comprehension) Experience working with diverse learners Montessori experience or training preferred Key Competencies
