Practice Environment

This position combines both outpatient and inpatient responsibilities in hematology/oncology, allowing you to provide comprehensive care for cancer and benign hematology conditions. Your duties will include managing an outpatient clinic, supervising fellows and trainees, overseeing an infusion center, and participating in the inpatient consult service at the Tibor Rubin VA Medical Center in Long Beach.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct thorough evaluations and manage patients with solid tumors, hematologic malignancies, and benign hematologic disorders in both outpatient and inpatient settings.

• Perform consultations, create treatment plans, and provide follow-up care for both inpatients and outpatients, including the management of chemotherapy and immunotherapy through the infusion center.

• Engage in and lead inpatient hematology/oncology consult services, coordinating admissions and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to manage complex cases.

• Supervise and mentor hematology/oncology fellows and residents from affiliated training programs, offering clinical guidance and bedside instruction.

• Participate in tumor boards and multidisciplinary meetings to ensure high-quality, coordinated cancer care for Veterans.

• Contribute to quality improvement initiatives and academic/teaching activities, with opportunities for clinical research based on interests and service requirements.

Compensation

The starting annual salary is competitive, ranging from $360,000 to $400,000 , based on qualifications and experience.

• Eligible employees can earn up to $15,000 in performance-based pay annually (total salary and performance pay not exceeding $400,000 per year).

• Proficiency Awards may also be available in addition to Pay for Performance incentives.

• Regular salary evaluations occur every two years, along with annual cost-of-living adjustments.

Schedule and Call

• Work hours are Monday to Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (full-time on-site at the VA Long Beach).

• Call coverage is on a rotational basis; during weeks when the physician is on the inpatient service, they will also be on call, with the fellow serving as the first on-call and the attending physician available for hospital visits as necessary.

Academic Affiliation

This role is affiliated with the University of California, Irvine (UCI), emphasizing fellow education (with most learners being fellows) and involvement from residents of other programs. Fellows rotate between UCI Medical Center and the Tibor Rubin VA Medical Center as part of their hematology/oncology training.

There are opportunities to teach, mentor, and supervise trainees in both inpatient and outpatient settings, as well as to pursue an academic appointment through UCI, contingent upon qualifications and institutional approval.

Basic Qualifications

• Must be a U.S. Citizen.

• M.D. or D.O. from an accredited medical institution (or ECFMG certification for international graduates).

• Possess a current, full, and unrestricted medical license to practice in the United States.

• Completion of an ACGME- or AOA-accredited Internal Medicine residency and Hematology/Oncology fellowship.

• Board Certified in Internal Medicine.

• Board Certified or Board Eligible in Hematology and/or Medical Oncology.

Preferred Qualifications

• New graduates and current trainees (recent or upcoming Hematology/Oncology fellowship graduates) are encouraged to apply.

• Due to organizational policy and service needs, non-citizens are not being considered for this specific position at this time.
