Registered Nurse

The registered professional nurse assumes responsibility and accountability for a group of patients for a designated shift. The nurse prescribes nursing care based on the nursing process that is consistent with the medical plan of care. This care is based on input from the patient and significant others. Collaboration with physicians and other members of the healthcare team is essential for coordinating patient care. Care is provided to patients of any age, including neonatal, infant, child, adolescent, adult, and geriatric. The nurse incorporates teaching and discharge planning needs into the overall plan of care. Delegation of certain aspects of patient care delivery occurs based on the current clinical competence of other nursing staff. Essential functions include utilizing the nursing process to assess patients. The nurse designs and implements an individualized plan of care for assigned patients. Evaluation of the effectiveness of the plan, patient responses to care, and progress towards established goals is required. The plan may be modified as necessary while considering age-specific, cultural, and spiritual needs of patients. Collaboration with other disciplines is necessary to formulate the plan of care. Knowledge of illnesses, injuries, diseases, and developmental stages is applied to patient care. The nurse utilizes knowledge of pharmacology when preparing and administering medications and IV therapy. Patient and family education is a critical component of care delivery. Assessment of knowledge, planning appropriate learning activities, and evaluating effectiveness are essential. The nurse responds to emergency patient situations or disasters following established protocols. Oversight of patient care delivery is important, with the nurse challenging or correcting errors of others to ensure safety. Observations, reactions, and problems regarding patients must be reported to the appropriate persons in a timely manner. Responsibility and accountability for problem-solving and clinical decision-making on the assigned shift are expected. Continuity of care is ensured by promptly processing and following through on physician's orders. The ability to set appropriate priorities in providing patient care is essential. The nurse acts as the patient's advocate, ensuring rights are preserved. Knowledge of job descriptions and appropriate delegation to nursing assistants and student nurses are required. The nurse practices registered nursing according to the applicable Nurse Practice Act. Awareness of professional responsibilities and the legal scope of practice is necessary. Effective communication with patients, families, staff, physicians, and coworkers is imperative. Documentation of assessments, nursing interventions, and care provided to all assigned patients is required. Technical aspects of patient care must be performed according to established policies and procedures. Procedures such as CPR and assessment of patient response are critical components of care. Safe use of equipment, including various patient care devices, is essential. Other job-related duties may be assigned as needed.
