Our pediatric Level I Trauma Center and ER is the only Central Florida facility to provide the highest level of emergency trauma care exclusively to children, and Orlando Health Arnold Palmer is the only facility in Florida to achieve Level I Children's Surgical Verification and Level I Trauma Verification by the American College of Surgeons.Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children provides comprehensive pediatric surgical care through a multidisciplinary team of surgeons, advanced practice providers (APPs), nurses, and specialists. The Pediatric Surgery APP plays a vital role in inpatient and outpatient management, trauma and burn care, perioperative coordination, and administrative responsibilities. This full-time position includes coverage across Arnold Palmer Hospital and Winnie Palmer Hospital.The Pediatric Surgery APP works collaboratively with pediatric surgeons, residents, and other healthcare professionals to deliver high-quality, family-centered surgical care. Responsibilities span inpatient management, trauma and burn care, perioperative coordination, outpatient clinic support, and administrative duties.Inpatient ManagementParticipate in daily rounds with surgeons and general surgery residents. Assist residents with patient care in Pediatric Critical Care, Step-Down, and Acute Care Floors. Coordinate perioperative care including social work involvement and consults. Communicate with nursing staff, other APPs, and attending physicians. Provide patient education and support. Manage wounds and perform surgical dressing changes. Oversee discharge planning and facilitate multidisciplinary rounds. Primary responsibility for NICU patients: Pre-rounding and rounding with surgeons; Perioperative care, order entry, and consent management; Documentation including consults and progress notes; Assist with bedside procedures including setup, consent, and specimen handling; Respond promptly to pages via PerfectServe.Trauma CareAssist surgeons in the trauma bay with procedures and supplies. Document history and physicals for trauma admissions. Facilitate orders, consultations, and patient needs. Communicate with families and perform tertiary trauma surveys.Burn ManagementLead outpatient burn clinic: patient education, debridement, dressing changes, documentation. Oversee inpatient burn care and sedated/OR debridement procedures. Communicate findings with surgeons and assist with surgical debridement and grafting.Perioperative CareCoordinate outpatient follow-up, supplies, and patient education. Obtain preoperative consents and complete H&Ps. Assist PACU with perioperative issues and discharges as needed.Pediatric Surgical ConsultsEvaluate consults at Arnold Palmer and Winnie Palmer Hospitals. Order and interpret imaging and labs, determine disposition. Document consults and staff with on-call physicians. Schedule outpatient follow-up and prepare discharge paperwork. Facilitate OR scheduling and preoperative orders.Outpatient Pediatric Surgery ClinicConduct APP clinic visits: post-operative, trauma rechecks, acute care. Assist surgeons with bedside procedures. Perform administrative tasks: paperwork, scheduling, front desk support. Triage phone calls and coordinate with community physicians and specialists. Run weekly laser hair removal clinic for pilonidal sinus disease. Potential to attend satellite and specialty clinics.Administrative DutiesPrepare minutes for monthly mortality and morbidity meetings. Maintain REDcaps patient tracking and documentation. Participate in quality improvement initiatives and guideline implementation. Collaborate with APPs and surgeons to enhance surgical care quality. Quality Improvement, Research & Education Attend and contribute to educational conferences, unit-based quality initiatives and continuing education activities to improve patient care and promote evidence-based practice. Support the education of students, residents, advanced practice provider fellows, and new team members when applicable.OperationsAttend and participate in General Surgery department meetings and APH Children's Surgery Meetings as scheduled. The APP is encouraged to attend medical PIPS review and/or surgical PIPS review, Pediatric Grand Rounds, and APP fellowship committee meetings when able.Paid Time Off (PTO)Requests for PTO must be made at least 30 days in advance according to OH policy. However, operational needs may require additional notice. PTO requests are granted on a first come first serve basis.Holiday CoveragePrimary Holiday Coverage will be provided by the General Surgery resident and/or fellow. APP holiday coverage will be requested based on staffing deficits and needs of the service. Holidays are defined as follows by OH policy: 3 minors include Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day. Majors include Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day.Work HoursCurrently Monday to Friday, 5 days per week. Coverage and hours are likely to change as we increase staff and need to meet the demands of the service.Trauma CallTrauma call coverage is primarily provided by general surgery residents and fellows. Advanced Practice Provider (APP) coverage may be required based on staffing needs, changes in residency program requirements, or service demands. This may include overnight and weekend call responsibilities. Additional compensation is available for APPs who provide coverage during these times.QualificationsGraduate of accredited physician assistant program or has obtained an MSN or APRN degree from an accredited nursing school. Acute Care Nurse Practitioner certification preferred. Primary Care Pediatric Nurse will be considered based on experience. Licensure/Certification Current Florida licensure as APRN or PA-C. Board certification via PNCB or NCCPA. Maintain active BLS, PALS, ABLS, and ATLS (if possible).
