School Nurse

School NurseHoke County Schools is seeking a School Nurse for the 2026-2027 school year. The position reports to the designated principal and Director of Student Support Services.The School Nurse will work full time and will be paid according to the NC State Salary Schedule. This position is exempt.The School Nurse will need to possess a valid TB test and health examination issued by the local county board of health or recognized medical authority. The candidate must have a registered nurse license in North Carolina or be working toward a baccalaureate degree, with national school nurse certification to be completed within three years of hire date. The candidate should have one to three years of nursing experience working with young children and adolescents (ages 5 – 18). A current NC driver's license is required. Effective communication skills with a wide range of age groups, ethnic, educational, and socio-economic backgrounds are essential. Fluency in English and Spanish is preferred.The School Nurse will not supervise any staff.Essential Job Functions include:Using the nursing process to assess, plan, and evaluate the health care of individual students as well as groups of students in schools.Identifying children with special health care needs and developing health care plans and emergency action plans.Monitoring kindergarten health assessment and immunization records and facilitating completion.Participating on coordinated school health teams as appropriate.Providing nursing care to school-age children, adolescents, and school staff in the school system by organizing/completing periodic health screenings, assuring follow-up, providing care and referring for services, implementing an effective medication administration system, supervising/assisting with prescribed treatments/procedures, providing for emergency care of illness/injury, and providing care for children with chronic illness.Using equipment/supplies correctly and assuring use of appropriate safety and infection control measures.Assuring compliance with communicable disease standards and monitoring the school environment for health and safety issues.Teaching/directing/advising/informing others by developing workshops/training activities for school personnel on health-related topics, providing individual explanations to students, parents, and appropriate staff regarding prevention, illness, treatment, etc., creating communications and communication processes for the programs, informing family/school staff of community resources, and supervising school personnel and volunteers assisting with the school health programs.Reporting/recording data by documenting patient data, plan of care, care rendered and response to care for individual students, reporting significant data regarding student health status to appropriate individuals, providing program reports in a timely manner, and appropriately reporting health and safety issues in the school environment.Performing other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.Physical and cognitive requirements include the ability to prepare, read and comprehend a variety of job-related forms, reports, spreadsheets, maps, plans, records, documentation and correspondence in all languages required by the job; understand and conform to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction and style; speak to individuals or groups of people with poise, voice control and confidence; respond adequately to inquiries or complaints; write using standard convention in all languages required by the job; apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagrammatic form; communicate effectively and efficiently in all languages required by the job using whatever communication device or system is required (telephone, Braille); use/interpret job related terminology, mathematical formulas and functions effectively and efficiently; deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions; perform under stress, deal with persons acting under stress and adapt when confronted with emergency situations; be sensitive to cultural differences among individuals and groups of persons; operate a motor vehicle; operate/use a variety of automated office machines and other office equipment; operate/use a variety of printing/graphic arts machines; operate/use a variety of audiovisual/electronic machines and devices; operate/use a variety of communication machines/equipment/devices; and operate/use a variety of job specific machines/equipment.Disclaimer: This job description is not a comprehensive list of all the duties, responsibilities, and skills that may be required of the employees assigned to this position.
