Job Summary

Primary Care Physician (Family/Internal Medicine) at the Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium (SEARHC) in Wrangell, Alaska. The role offers clinical autonomy, comprehensive primary care responsibilities, and the opportunity to work within a community‑focused practice.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive primary and preventive care, including diagnosis, treatment, health maintenance, prenatal care, and minor procedures.
  • Coordinate patient care, make referrals, and manage a dedicated panel of patients.
  • Maintain accurate, timely documentation in accordance with SEARHC policy and EMR requirements.
  • Participate actively in quality initiatives, provider meetings, and medical staff functions.
  • Use the Meditech EMR, Dragon dictation, and other clinical technology effectively.
  • Provide clinical leadership, promote teamwork, offer guidance to mid‑level providers, and resolve conflicts.
  • Deliver services outside the clinic as needed (e.g., long‑term care centers, patient homes, schools).
  • Adhere to standards of care, EMTALA, HIPAA, risk management, medical ethics, and malpractice principles.

Qualifications & Certification

  • MD or DO degree with an Alaska medical license (or ability to obtain one).
  • Board‑certified or board‑eligible in Family Medicine or Internal Medicine.
  • DEA registration and current BLS certification.
  • Strong communication, teamwork, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Knowledge of primary care principles, health‑care risk management, and clinical procedures appropriate to an outpatient and emergency setting.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base salary: Family Medicine $288,764 – $318,071; Internal Medicine $294,259 – $324,177 (based on experience and incentives).
  • Geographic Differential Stipend: $35,000; Sign‑On Bonus: $35,000; Relocation Assistance: $25,000 with a three‑year commitment.
  • Health insurance, dental, vision coverage with FSAs; Life insurance, short‑ and long‑term disability, accident, critical illness, hospital insurance.
  • Identity & Fraud Protection, Legal Insurance, Pet Insurance.
  • Pre‑tax annual CME allowance: $6,000.
  • 401(k) plan with up to 5% employer match, including Roth and 457(b) options.

Schedule & Work‑Life Balance

Monday‑Friday, 8:00AM – 5:00PM with no on‑call responsibilities. Annual time off: 33 days (264 hours) including holidays, plus 80 hours of CME.

Practice Details & Patient Volume

Clinic includes 11 exam spaces, one procedure room, one medical assistant, a primary‑care nurse case manager, and nurse triage. Ancillary services are available (mammogram, CT, DEXA, ultrasound, X‑ray, lab, MRI). Visits: approximately 12‑14 pediatric patients per day plus 4 hours of administrative time weekly. EMR: Meditech with Dragon dictation and DAX AI documentation support.

Procedural opportunities include women’s health, prenatal care, vasectomies, colposcopies, circumcisions, wound care, abscess drainage, and cyst removal. The clinic is attached to the Wrangell Medical Center, a Critical Access Hospital with a 24/7 emergency department. Optional long‑term care, home visits, and rural outreach may be available.

Location & Lifestyle

Wrangell Island is a community of ~1,800 residents offering a family‑friendly atmosphere and world‑class outdoor recreation (fishing, hiking, boating). The local schools serve ~260–270 students with small class sizes and strong individualized learning. Transportation includes daily commercial flights and ferry service.
