Charge Nurse
Your job is more than a job. The Charge Nurse serves as a key member of the unit-based leadership team. Under the general supervision of the unit's Director of Nursing or designee, the Charge Nurse is responsible for managing patient-centered care coordination within the unit/department during the designated shift. The Charge Nurse assumes responsibility for the direction and coordination of all functions in the unit during their designated shifts. In collaboration with other members of the management team, the Charge Nurse directs, monitors, and evaluates nursing care in accordance with established policies/procedures, serves as a resource person for staff, and models a commitment to the hospital's vision, mission and values to support an extraordinary patient experience and clinical outcomes that contribute to overall departmental performance. At least 20% of the nurse's total shifts worked must be designated as Charge Nurse.
Your everyday includes:
- Collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to coordinate, evaluate, customize, and deliver high quality, patient-centered care.
- Supervising personnel providing direct patient care and delegating activities based on patient care needs and exercises judgement regarding patient care assignments using established policies/procedures and assessing competencies of available patient care staff.
- Assisting with operationalizing evidence-based practices to enhance patient safety and quality outcomes.
- Supporting the achievement of internal/external benchmarks, accreditations, and designations.
- Ensuring compliance with all policies, procedures, and regulatory standards.
- Ensuring equipment is functioning properly.
- Assisting with admission and discharge processes to ensure efficient throughput and high quality, patient-centered care.
- Participating in the ongoing assessment of the quality of patient care services provided in the unit, in collaboration with other members of the management team.
- Reflecting core values when interacting with co-workers, patients, family members, and others in the community to foster an environment where employees are engaged and where patient care is unparalleled.
- Ensuring compliance with evidence-based practices that enhance patient experience and customer service.
- Collaborating with subject matter experts and other leaders to create an environment of teamwork that supports improved outcomes and service.
- Engaging in service recovery when necessary.
- Providing direct and ongoing supervision of staff with regard to conflict resolution and personnel policy compliance.
- Leading in a way that inspires commitment to the vision/mission/values of the organization.
- Assuming responsibility for resolving and/or channeling employee grievances according to appropriate procedures.
- Supporting the efforts of the facility to improve engagement by operationalizing current nursing strategies, including employee rounding, hourly rounds, and other initiatives.
- Providing direction, supervision, and guidance to staff members. Delivering coaching and feedback where appropriate. Facilitating training to improve performance and engagement.
- Providing recommendations related to interviewing, selecting, and training new staff. Recommending and implementing courses of action, including training and development, conflict resolution, personnel policy compliance, to ensure a competitively superior organization.
- Representing the organization positively within the community; participating in company-supported community/patient events and in-services.
- Assisting with staff scheduling.
- Supporting proper inventory control and assisting with managing supplies and equipment.
- Holding staff accountable for complying with safety regulations, emergency procedures medication administration, infection control procedures, ethics and compliance, risk management activities and follow through, universal precautions, body mechanics and use of safety equipment. (Assist with regulatory audits)
- Ensuring that staff is knowledgeable of the National Safety Patient Goals and adhere to expectations, policies and procedures.
- Completing review of issues daily and follows through in correcting situations and addressing staff as appropriate. Evaluating outcomes.
- Ensuring that equipment is working properly and adequate supplies are available and utilized in a proper and safe manner for patient and staff safety.
- Assuring a safe environment free of clutter in patients' rooms and in the halls. Ensuring staff practices all fire drills responsibly.
- Other duties as assigned.
The must-haves:
Education required:
- Associate in Science Degree required
- Bachelor's Degree in Nursing preferred
Required experience:
- 1 year or more of clinical experience in applicable clinical area required
Licensure, registration, and/or certification required:
Current, clear, unencumbered nurse licensure in the State of Louisiana or Compact Nurse License required.
