Instructional Paraprofessional with Hearing Impaired Interpretative Skills

To provide interpretive services and/or physical, emotional, behavioral, and academic support to students with hearing impairments and/or other disabilities.

Job qualifications include:

• Valid Ohio Interpreter for the Hearing Impaired License.
• Interpretation or Transliteration Certificate in American Sign Language (ASL).
• One of the following requirements is needed for compliance:
• Complete at least two years of study at an institution of higher education; OR
• Obtain an associate (or higher) degree from an accredited institution of higher education; OR
• Meet a rigorous standard of quality and demonstrate, through a formal State or local academic assessment -- knowledge of, and the ability to assist in instructing reading, writing and mathematics; or knowledge of, and the ability to assist in readiness for reading, writing, and mathematics.
• Proficient in communication skills including but not limited to: American Sign Language (ASL), Pidgin Signed English (PSE) and/or Signed Exact English (SEE).
• Good human relations with an ability to communicate in a courteous manner.
• A neat appearance.
• Experience working with children preferred.

Essential duties include:

• Providing interpretive services.
• Assisting students or staff as assigned by the Intervention Specialist.
• Supporting an inclusive educational environment.
• Assisting in the preparation of classroom materials, displays, and individual student accommodations and modifications.
• Arranging and facilitating interpreting for parent-teacher conferences, open houses and school programs/assemblies.
• Assisting the Intervention Specialist in routine classroom and school activities, implementation of IEP services, behavior plans, student assessment, playground and lunch duty.
• Assisting special education students in regular education classes.
• Assisting Intervention Specialist in maintaining a good learning environment, including classroom management.
• Assisting students with personal health care needs such as toileting, personal hygiene and use of adaptive equipment.
• Participating in professional growth activities.
• Ensuring the safety of students.
• Establishing and maintaining cooperative professional relationships.
• Remaining free of any alcohol or nonprescription controlled substance and abuse of any prescribed controlled substance in the workplace throughout employment in the district.
• Exhibiting professional behavior, emotional stability, and sound judgment.
• Serving as a role model for students in how to conduct themselves as citizens and as responsible, and intelligent human beings.
• Understanding the legal responsibility to help instill in students the belief in, and practice of, ethical principles and democratic values.
• Maintaining confidentiality and respect for confidential information at all times.
• Other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or his/her designee.

Terms of employment: 191 days (183 work days, 8 paid holidays); 7 hours per day excluding lunch to be established by Supervisor. Salary as provided by Negotiated Agreement. Work year to be established by the Board of Education. Salary: $25.72/HR. - $30.63/HR. Dependent on experience.
