Position Overview Outside machinists install, groom, and test ship’s major mechanical components and systems on commercial and naval ships. Responsibilities include working on steam turbines, reduction gears, propellers, reactor components, catapults, weapons systems, periscopes, and support equipment such as laundry, food service, and refrigeration. Key Responsibilities Operate a wide variety of tools and machinery ranging from wrenches and screwdrivers to saws, drill presses, optical equipment, mills, portable machines, boring equipment, precision grinders, instruments, and lathes. Physical Requirements Climb ladders and work at extreme heights. Work in small, tight, or confined spaces. Kneel, squat, crawl, bend, stoop, and climb daily. Lift heavy objects ≥ 40 lbs. Reach overhead repeatedly. Work indoors or outdoors all year in all weather. Work in areas with radiation. Pass a respirator fit test. Shift schedule as production needs. Pass a Physical Agility Test. Qualifications Candidates must be 18 years or older and legally eligible to work in the United States. Minimum experience: 3 + years as a machinist, machinist mate, mechanic/automotive repairman, engine man, heavy equipment repairman, or similar. Nice to Have Prior mechanical experience such as automotive repair, plant maintenance, machinery installation/repair. Completion of a technical/vocational program in machining, diesel technology, automotive, HVAC, or mechanical.
