Job Description

This role offers an opportunity for an experienced phlebotomist to work in a fast-paced patient service center in New York City, performing a high volume of blood draws each day. You will use your expertise in venipuncture, specimen handling, and patient communication to ensure accurate, efficient, and compassionate collection and processing of laboratory specimens. The position requires strong technical skills, reliability, and professionalism, with a preference for candidates who are bilingual in Spanish or Bengali.

Responsibilities

  • Perform blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles, independently and confidently from the first day.

  • Collect and store specimens, including blood, urine, and fecal samples, in accordance with established procedures and protocols.

  • Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.

  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes to ensure accuracy and proper test processing.

  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and protocols.

  • Verify all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the provider's script to ensure 100% accuracy before processing.

  • Package specimens for transport, following all guidelines to maintain specimen integrity.

  • Store specimen samples at the required temperatures and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes, accurately labeling each according to protocol.

  • Record maintenance data, perform decontamination tasks, and follow all safety and infection control procedures in the work area.

  • Update and maintain accurate patient information and documentation in the appropriate systems.

  • Participate in a mock blood draw during the onsite interview process to demonstrate phlebotomy skills and technique.

  • Collaborate with fellow phlebotomists and staff to manage daily patient volume and ensure efficient workflow.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum of 2 or more years of recent professional work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting

  • Demonstrated proficiency with straight needles and the ability to perform venipunctures independently from day one.

  • Strong experience in blood draws, venipuncture, and specimen collection.

  • Ability to perform 20-40 blood draws per day in a busy patient service center environment.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and data entry tasks.

  • Reliable and punctual work habits, with a strong sense of responsibility.

  • Strong verbal communication skills to clearly explain procedures and interact professionally with patients and colleagues.

  • Ability to follow detailed procedures and protocols for specimen labeling, handling, storage, and transport.

  • Comfort working in a fast-paced setting with fluctuating patient volumes.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Bilingual fluency in Spanish or Bengali is preferred but not required; candidates who are bilingual may be considered with less than 3 years of experience.

  • Experience working in a high-volume patient service center or outpatient laboratory environment.

  • Strong attention to detail when matching requisitions to specimens and verifying orders.

  • Ability to remain calm, courteous, and patient-focused during busy periods.

  • Willingness to participate in a one-round phone interview followed by a second-round onsite interview that includes a mock blood draw with a phlebotomy professional.

  • Familiarity with centrifuges and other basic laboratory equipment used in specimen processing.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Jackson Heights, NY.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $23.00 - $23.00/hr.
