Fleet Mechanic / Heavy Equipment Mechanic (Pavement Marking / Striping) Compensation: Journey-level rate starting at $41.19/hr + health & pension (approx. $55.00/hr total package) Specialized Pavement Marking (SPM) , a Frontline Road Safety Group company, leads the highway striping/pavement marking industry with a focus on Safety, Quality, and Production. We are building a high-performing maintenance team that keeps our fleet reliable, compliant, and jobsite-ready. We are seeking a dedicated, experienced Fleet Mechanic / Heavy Equipment Mechanic in Tualatin, OR . The role is ideal for a mid-to-senior mechanic who can independently diagnose complex issues, drive preventative maintenance, and raise the standard for fleet uptime and safety. Job Overview You will maintain and repair a diverse construction fleet to support safe, on-time production. Responsibilities include troubleshooting electrical, hydraulic, diesel, HVAC/A/C, and mechanical systems; performing DOT-related inspections and repairs; and contributing to a strong preventative maintenance program to maximize equipment availability and reduce downtime. The fleet includes Isuzu, Cummins, MAC, Peterbilt, Detroit, and CAT platforms, plus specialty equipment such as sweepers, milling machines, and road striping/pavement marking equipment (paint systems, pumps, spray guns, hoses, valves, air systems, heaters/burners, and glass bead dispensers), including propane/diesel-fired heaters. Key Responsibilities Diagnose and repair light- to heavy-duty construction equipment, prioritizing safety, uptime, and quality workmanship. Troubleshoot complex electrical, hydraulic, diesel, and HVAC/A/C issues using service manuals, schematics, and diagnostic tools. Perform preventative maintenance (PM) per OEM/operations manuals; identify wear trends and recommend corrective actions. Complete DOT inspections and ensure equipment remains compliant and road-ready. Remove and replace components using appropriate hand/power tools; verify repairs through functional testing and documentation. Fabricate, weld, and cut parts as needed (arc welding, wire feed, and flame cutting). Troubleshoot and repair pavement marking/striping systems, including paint circulation and pressure issues, clogged lines, worn packings/seals, spray pattern problems, and electrical/solenoid or pneumatic controls. Service and calibrate glass bead delivery systems and striping components (dispensers, gates, sensors, air systems) to support consistent application and quality. Support readiness of striping trucks/equipment by performing pre-season inspections, PMs, and functional checks on paint, bead, heater, and air/hydraulic systems. Perform routine maintenance (oil changes, batteries, lubrication, filters) and support seasonal readiness (heaters, striping systems, etc.). Work safely and consistently follow established Company Safety Policies and procedures. Partner with operations/supervision on repair priorities, parts needs, and scheduling to minimize downtime. Perform other related duties as assigned. Qualifications Required High School Diploma or GED. 3-5+ years of relevant experience as a fleet/heavy equipment mechanic (more experience welcome). Strong experience with diesel engines, hydraulics, and DOT-related inspections/repairs. Welding and fabrication experience. Ability to pass pre-employment drug screening. Manual dexterity and strong hand/eye coordination. Ability to lift/transport 50+ lbs. Ability to work indoors/outdoors in varying weather conditions. Team-oriented, dependable, and safety-focused. Provide your own basic hand tools (specialty tools are provided). Preferred Technical degree and/or industry certifications (diesel/heavy equipment, hydraulics, ASE or similar). Experience maintaining pavement marking/striping equipment (striping trucks, paint systems, pumps, burners/heaters, and glass bead systems). Experience using a maintenance tracking system/CMMS and documenting repairs/PMs. Root‑cause troubleshooting mindset; ability to recommend reliability improvements and standard work. Experience mentoring junior mechanics or leading work in a shop/field environment. Valid Class B Driver’s License with clean driving record. Class A strongly preferred. HazMat endorsement (or ability to obtain) is a plus. Union wages + benefits Medical, dental, and vision insurance; pension; and paid sick leave. Working conditions This role is 95% shop-based in Tualatin with occasional field calls and local travel as needed. Work may be performed indoors and outdoors with exposure to varying weather conditions, dust, fumes, and hazardous materials (solvents, adhesives, paints, hot oil, and other chemicals).
