Senior Software Engineer II, Managed Databases

DigitalOcean seeks a Senior Software Engineer II to join the Managed Databases (DBaaS) engineering organization. This IC4 role focuses on architecting and operating fully managed PostgreSQL and MySQL database services, combining distributed systems expertise with hands-on platform infrastructure work to serve production data workloads and AI-intensive applications.

What You'll Do

• Architect and implement scalable DBaaS control-plane and infrastructure components that improve throughput, multi-region operability, and reliability for managed database workloads
• Translate ambiguous customer and system requirements into clear technical designs and actionable workstreams with product and engineering partners
• Own performance and resiliency outcomes by improving resource utilization, fault tolerance, and availability through profiling and targeted optimization of I/O, CPU, and network bottlenecks under production load
• Enhance lifecycle capabilities including automated failover, continuous backups, point-in-time recovery, and maintenance workflows to support higher data volumes and tighter SLAs
• Guide technical decisions for team engineers through design reviews and code reviews; contribute clear design documentation for initiatives you lead
• Mentor team members through technical guidance and architectural reviews to accelerate growth and execution velocity
• Operate built systems by establishing observability and recovery practices, participating in on-call rotations, and converting incident learnings into durable platform improvements

What You Need

• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience building and operating large-scale distributed systems or data-plane/control-plane infrastructure in SaaS/PaaS environments
• Proven track record diagnosing and solving complex, high-concurrency engineering problems in production cloud environments
• Strong understanding of concurrency, failure modes, multi-region concerns, and performance optimization in production Linux/cloud environments
• Demonstrated ability to drive complex cross-team technical projects, mentor engineers, and communicate tradeoffs clearly with partners and leadership
• Growth mindset with appetite for feedback and commitment to leaving systems better than you found them

Nice to Have

• Working knowledge of relational database engine internals, specifically PostgreSQL and/or MySQL, including query performance, replication, and scaling
• Experience scaling services for compute, memory, and networking demands of data-intensive or AI inference-adjacent workloads
