TEACHER ASSISTANT

SUMMARY: Assist teachers in the special education and regular education classroom with daily activities which support student learning. This is determined by the student’s IEPs and the directives of the teachers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Assist the teacher in routine classroom operations. Demonstrate an understanding of assigned students’ learning profiles. Demonstrate initiative and creativity with students and their program. Follow through with prescribed behavioral management programs. Maintain classroom environment to support student learning, as directed by the teacher. Correct students’ work; photocopy materials; keep logs and records as directed by the teacher; write lessons/notes on the board. Read IEPs of each assigned student. Implement accommodations on IEP (ie. taking student notes, reading to student, administering tests orally, etc.). Act as liaison between regular education teacher and special education teacher to ensure continuity of service. Prepare to assist students in specific subject areas according to the requirements of the IEPs and the demands of the content area classes. Ensure content area requirements are noted in student’s plan book and the teacher is aware of same requirements. Be available and ready to assist the special education and regular education teachers as needed to support student learning.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervises students in the absence of the teacher for brief discrete periods of time.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Minimum of an associate’s degree and enrollment in a bachelor’s program at an accredited college/university. Previous experience with special education students.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Language Skills: Ability to read, write and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to effectively present information in one‑on‑one and small group situations to staff, parents, students, and administrators. Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to develop and interpret graphs, tables, and charts. Reasoning Ability: Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to work with assigned special education student population, maintain confidentiality, maintain composure under stressful conditions, develop effective working relationships, communicate clearly and concisely, and perform duties in awareness of district requirements and School Committee policies.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
