Mental Health Coordinator

The Mental Health Coordinator is responsible for supporting the emotional, social, and behavioral well-being of campers and staff. This position provides preventive mental-health guidance, crisis intervention, and ongoing support consistent with GSUSA policies and procedures, American Camp Association (ACA) standards, Texas Department of Health requirements, and standing mental-health protocols approved by the council. The Mental Health Coordinator promotes a safe, inclusive environment where all campers and staff feel supported.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  1. Must reside at Camp Stevens Ranch Sunday–Friday during summer camp.
  2. Provides emotional and behavioral support to campers and staff, including crisis intervention, de-escalation, and referrals as needed.
  3. Conducts daily wellness check-ins with living units to monitor overall mental and emotional health of the camp population, including staff and campers.
  4. Establishes and follows consistent wellness routines, including procedures for camper arrival screenings, check-outs, and daily emotional-support needs.
  5. Prepares, participates in, and leads staff training sessions on mental-health awareness, behavior management, trauma-informed practices, and universal precautions for emotional safety.
  6. Participates in staff training week and all required meetings.
  7. Captures and maintains mental-health related documentation for each staff member as needed.
  8. Ensures every camper has required wellness and behavioral forms completed in Camp Docs prior to the start of each camp session.
  9. Keeps mental-health logs and documentation in Camp Docs updated daily.
  10. Conducts inventory of wellness and behavioral support supplies; submits requests to the Camp Director to ensure adequate resources.
  11. Becomes familiar with camp programs and offer guidance on behavioral expectations, inclusion strategies, and emotional-safety practices.
  12. Follows procedures for reporting incidents, behavioral concerns, injuries, emergencies, safety checks, and other required documentation.
  13. Maintains the Wellness Center (or designated mental-health space) according to ACA and GSTOP guidelines.
  14. Maintains effective communication and public relations with staff, parents/guardians, and community partners while upholding confidentiality standards.
  15. In the event of a serious incident, crisis, or emergency, follows the resident camp emergency plan and refrains from making public statements except to authorized personnel and emergency responders.
  16. Assists in closing responsibilities and packing all materials at the end of the summer season.
  17. Prepares a summary and evaluation of the mental-health needs during the camp season, including trends, recommendations, and program improvements.
  18. Must be able to drive camp vehicles and physically respond promptly to crisis situations as needed.
  19. Learns all evacuation and emergency procedures and supports staff and campers during drills or emergencies.
  20. Trains campers and staff on emotional safety, conflict resolution, and supportive communication.

Job Qualifications

  1. Minimum 25 years of age.
  2. Education or experience in counseling, psychology, social work, youth development, or related fields preferred.
  3. Current CPR & First Aid Certification (provided if needed).
  4. Commitment to the mission and purpose of Girl Scouting.
  5. Membership in the Girl Scout organization.
  6. Must be willing to work with all people regardless of race, religion, ethnic origin, socio-economic status, sexual orientation, age, or disability.
  7. Desire and ability to work with children and adults in a camp community.
  8. Ability to work a flexible schedule including nights while residing at camp.
  9. Strong communication skills, professional demeanor, and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  10. Valid driver's license in the state of residence with acceptable driving record, insurance, and reliable transportation.
  11. You must pass a criminal background check, motor vehicle records check, and drug screening.

Physical Demands And Work Environment

  • The physical demands described here represent those required to successfully perform the essential duties of this position. Reasonable accommodation may be made.
  • While performing this role, the employee is regularly required to talk, listen, and engage in active de-escalation. The employee may need to stand, walk, sit, reach with hands and arms, or move to different areas of camp quickly.
  • Ability and willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions, walk long distances on uneven terrain, and lift/move up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability and willingness to work in environments that include dust, mold, pollen, insects, animals, and other natural allergens.
  • Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Noise level is usually moderate.

  • Staff Training Week: June 1st - 5th
  • Week One: June 7th - 12th
  • Week Two: June 14th - 19th
  • Week Three: June 21st - 26th
  • Week Four: June 28th - July 1st
  • Week Five: July 7th - 10th
  • Week Six: July 12th - 17th
  • Staff Camp Clean Up: July 18th - 21st

Certifications/Licenses

  • Current CPR & First Aid Certification (provided if needed).
  • Additional mental-health training (e.g., Youth Mental Health First Aid, trauma-informed care) preferred but not required.
