Qualified Craft Worker (HVACR) (40 Hour)

Position Overview Qualified Craft Worker (HVACR) – 40 Hour (Full‑time). Location: DESPP Facilities Maintenance, Meriden. Monday‑Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM. Valid driver’s license required. Benefits Medical and dental insurance Sick, vacation, and personal leave accruals State holidays Tuition reimbursement Professional growth and work/life balance Responsibilities Perform preventive maintenance, repairs, and installations of HVACR systems at DESPP radio towers, troops, buildings statewide. Operate, maintain, repair, install, modify, and assemble air conditioning and refrigeration equipment. Determine required cooling capacity, use psychometric charts, control and measure airflow, room air changes, and pressurization. Monitor computerized control systems, perform fuel tests, gas leaks, add water treatment chemicals to boilers, and make estimates of time and materials. Keep necessary records, act as liaison with other units and outside contacts, operate heavy equipment as needed. Respond to fire and crash emergencies at state owned airports. Knowledge, Skills & Ability Knowledge of HVACR trade practices, tools, materials, and methods. Interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to prepare estimates, keep shop records, and use computer software. Minimum Qualifications – General Experience Four (4) years of experience in tasks involving heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration trade. Minimum Qualifications – Special Experience Two (2) years of the general experience must have been performing skilled HVACR trades. Substitution Options Diploma from a vocational or technical school with HVACR maintenance subject requirements may substitute for two (2) years of general experience. Completion of UConn Facilities Internship Training Program may substitute for general and special experience with UConn and HR approval. Two (2) years as a Qualified Craft Worker Trainee in a designated maintenance trade area may substitute for general and special experience. Experience on a military base, aircraft carrier or large compound may substitute on a year‑for‑year basis. Preferred Qualifications Experience applying HVACR trade practices, tools, materials, and methods. Experience using computer software for estimates and shop records. Driving experience with vans and pickup trucks. Knowledge of HVACR preventive maintenance and troubleshooting. Special Requirements UConnecticut employees must possess and retain current state heating, piping, and/or cooling license. Other incumbents may be required to obtain appropriate licenses, permits, or certifications. Physical and Working Conditions Must have adequate physical strength, stamina, agility, visual and auditory acuity to perform duties. May be required to lift moderate to heavy weights, use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles, and be exposed to risk from equipment and weather.
