Registered Nurse (RN), Operating Room SH (will train position)

Summary The Registered Nurse provides direct patient care that is guided by the American Nurses Association (ANA) scope of practice. A Registered Nurse collaborates with patients, family/significant others, peers, physicians, and other members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team in the delivery of healthcare services to patients. The Registered Nurse assesses patient needs, develops care plans, implements and evaluates medical and nursing regimens in accordance with the hospital and nursing philosophy, policies/procedures, and standards. They demonstrate leadership skills and commitment to professional accountability and growth. Responsibilities Completes patient assessment and reassessment as clinically indicated: Documents detailed information incorporating the plan of care, interventions, and outcomes reflecting the patient’s physical, mental, and emotional status. Ensures appropriate documentation based on the level of care the patient is receiving, including transfer/discharge documentation as indicated. Follows the five Rights of Medication Administration. Verbalizes to patients/family/significant other the medication they are receiving. Assesses the patient prior to administering medications, noting allergies, parameters, potential side‑effects, effectiveness, and intervenes as needed. Reassesses and documents response according to hospital policy. Coordinates and supervises the delivery of nursing care, including the delegation of tasks while maintaining accountability for delegated care. Actively works to promote a culture of safety: Assesses patients for potential safety risks. Adheres to hospital policies and procedures regarding patient safety and initiates interventions related to the identified risk factors. Conducts bedside shift report and bedside rounds with peers on assigned patients at change of shift. Demonstrates quality by documenting the application of the nursing process in a responsible, accountable, and ethical manner. Ensures patient hand‑off is appropriate when leaving for breaks. Assesses learning needs of patient/family/significant other. Plans and provides appropriate instruction using applicable teaching methods and documents response to teaching. Cares for specific patient populations as necessary. Delivers patient‑centered care, embracing cultural diversity, respecting dignity, and maintaining open lines of communication, including active listening. Meets accreditation, regulatory, and compliance responsibilities related to the position. Works to promote a culture of learning and growth: Seeks experiences, formal learning activities, and independent learning opportunities to develop clinical and professional skills. Mentors others to succeed through teaching and support. Performs other duties as assigned within state nursing scope of practice. Education Associate’s Level DGRE Other Information Current and unobstructed New York State Registered Nurse (NY Hospitals) Current and unobstructed Connecticut Registered Nurse License (CT Hospitals) New graduates awaiting licensure at the discretion of the Chief Nursing Officer (CT only) American Nurses Association endorsed certifications or Academy of Medical‑Surgical Nurses Certification preferred (based on certification specialty hours of work requirement) Training requirements (examples): BLS – Required upon hire for all nursing care areas ACLS – Required by end of orientation (specific to unit and specialty) PALS – Required by end of orientation for ED, PACU, pediatric areas NRP – Required by end of orientation for MCH, NICU, LDRP, DR EFM – Within one year of hire (LDRP) TNCC – Within one year of hire (various ED and ICU units) ENPC – Within one year of hire (ED RN) TCAR – Within one year of hire (ICU, PACU) Behavioral Health de‑escalation training – Within six months of hire Other specialty certifications as applicable Credentials: ACLS, ENPC, PALS, RN, TNCC Working Conditions Manual: significant manual skills/motor coordination & finger dexterity Occupational: some occupational risk Physical effort: medium to heavy effort, may exert up to 35 lbs.
