Summary

UIHS Physicians provide comprehensive medical care to clients of United Indian Health Services (UIHS).

Essential duties and responsibilities include:

  • Providing clinical care as granted via the UIHS credentialing and privileging process.
  • Eliciting and recording information about client's medical history, surgical history, social history, family history, and other pertinent information related to the care of clients.
  • Conducting appropriate physical exams based on the client's chief complaints and reason for visit.
  • Ordering or executing various tests, analyses, and diagnostics to provide information on client's condition.
  • Analyzing reports and findings of tests and of examination, and diagnosing condition.
  • Administering or prescribing treatments and medication as needed.
  • Abstaining from costly, unnecessary, or excessive testing and treatment.
  • Ordering and overseeing the vaccination of clients to immunize clients from communicable diseases using current guidelines.
  • Advising and referring clients concerning diet, hygiene, and methods for prevention of disease.
  • Educating clients on the importance of preventive services, such as screening tests, counseling services, and preventive medicines, as well as modalities to detect illnesses before they cause symptoms or problems.
  • Reporting births, deaths, and outbreak of contagious diseases to governmental authorities.
  • Referring clients to medical specialists or other practitioners for specialized treatment.
  • Making house and emergency calls to attend to clients unable to visit office or clinic, if necessary.
  • Conducting physical examinations to provide information needed for admission to school, consideration for jobs, or eligibility for insurance coverage.
  • Consulting and advising Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants at UIHS clinics.
  • Providing provider supervision to Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners as assigned.
  • Attending department meetings and other meetings as assigned.
  • Maintaining a professional, organized, and clean working environment by following organizational policies, guidelines, and safety standards.
  • Assisting in development of departmental policy, procedures, and quality improvement activities within the clinic as directed.
  • Providing after hours back-up phone coverage for client advice by providing at home call coverage for UIHS at least five (5) weeks per calendar year.
  • Participating in the peer review process by returning reviews in a timely manner and participating in peer review meetings as needed.
  • Physician may be assigned to selected specific duties or committees based on interest, experience, and expertise; including, but not limited to: Diabetes Advisor, Laboratory Director, Infection Prevention Committee Liaison, etc.
  • Must be willing to learn more about the American Indian culture and attend at least one Cultural Presentation/Training per year.
  • Must be willing to work with American Indian/Alaska Native people and demonstrate cultural awareness and humility.
  • Must be willing to deliver services in a culturally responsive manner.
  • Adheres to accreditation and compliance standards/guideline
  • Other duties may be assigned.

Specialized/Advanced Inpatient and Outpatient Clinical Duties may provide via contract specifics:

  • Providing medical, pediatric and/or obstetrical services as privileged through local hospitals.
  • Participating in on-call responsibilities and hospital duties, as outlined by contractual agreement.

Supervisory responsibilities:

  • This job has no supervisory responsibilities although the physician will direct the work of others as it relates to client care. If applicable, the Physician will supervise individual physician assistants or work as collaborating physician for individual nurse practitioners in accordance with UIHS policies and procedures.

Education/Experience:

Level I:

  • Graduate education to include graduation from an accredited Allopathic or Osteopathic Medical School.
  • Post-Doctoral Graduate year 1 completion from a primary care Residency Training Program.

Level II:

  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in an American Board of Medical Specialties (AMBS) approved Board.

Level III:

  • Meet above criteria with greater than five (5) years of post-doctoral training clinical experience, or, Have Board Certification in a Primary Care related Fellowship from an AMBS approved Board.

Level IV:

  • Meet the above criteria with greater than ten (10) years of post-doctoral training clinical experience, or,
  • Have greater than five (5) years clinical experience after Fellowship Board Certification in an AMBS approved Board.

Computer Operations

  • Proficient personal computer skills including electronic mail, record keeping, routine database activity, word processing, spreadsheet, and presentations.
  • Must be able to work in an Electronic Health Records (EHR) system.
