Compensation: $35 - 40 an hour
We area leading, patient-centered, multi-specialty medical practice with seven locations across New York City. We are seeking an office-based OB/GYN triage nurse for our Brooklyn location.
Job Summary
The OB Triage Nurse serves as the primary clinical liaison between patients and providers in a fast-paced OB/GYN office. This position is responsible for conducting comprehensive telephone assessments of obstetric and gynecological patients, determining the urgency of care using established protocols, providing education, and coordinating immediate care with physicians or midwives. The ideal candidate possesses sharp critical thinking skills to differentiate between normal pregnancy symptoms and potential emergencies.
Key Responsibilities & Duties
- Telephone Triage: Answer incoming patient calls, evaluate symptoms using evidenced-based triage protocols, and determine appropriate disposition (e.g., home care advice, urgent office visit, or emergency department transfer).
- Obstetric & GYN Assessment: Assess patient needs regarding pregnancy, postpartum, and gynecologic concerns (bleeding, pain, infection, etc.).
- Documentation: Accurately document all telephone interactions, assessments, advice given, and follow-up plans in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) in compliance with HIPAA regulations.
- Patient Education & Counseling: Provide guidance on prenatal care, normal pregnancy symptoms, postpartum recovery, and medication safety.
- Care Coordination: Communicate with physicians, midwives, or nurse practitioners regarding patient concerns, and facilitate prescription refills or lab orders per protocol.
- Lab/Result Management: Review lab results, diagnostic reports, and pap smears, and notify patients of results/follow-up instructions as directed by providers.
- Emergency Response: Identify red flags such as preterm labor symptoms, severe preeclampsia signs, or decreased fetal movement and initiate appropriate emergency protocols.
Qualifications & Skills
- Licensure: Valid, unencumbered RN license in the state of New York.
- Education: Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing (BSN preferred).
- Experience: 2 years of clinical experience in Obstetrics/Gynecology, Labor & Delivery, or postpartum nursing preferred.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in EHR systems.
- Core Competencies: Strong critical thinking, excellent verbal and written communication, active listening, and ability to remain calm under pressure.
