As a Sign Language Interpreter in Aurora, IL your days will Include:- Providing services to the general education population
- Servicing 4th grade mainstream students
- Provide accurate, real-time sign language interpretation (e.g., ASL, PSE, or other assigned mode) for students who are deaf or hard of hearing during classroom instruction and school-related activities.
- Facilitate effective communication between students, teachers, staff, peers, and families while maintaining the student's access to the educational environment.
- Interpret across a variety of settings, including general education classrooms, special education services, assemblies, field trips, meetings, and extracurricular activities as assigned.
- Collaborate with teachers, special education staff, and related service providers to support student learning and communication goals outlined in the student's IEP.
- Maintain strict confidentiality and adhere to professional standards, ethical guidelines, and school district policies.
- Assist with promoting student independence and self-advocacy while remaining impartial and avoiding instructional or disciplinary roles unless otherwise specified.
- Participate in team meetings, professional development, and other school activities as appropriate to support student success and maintain interpreting skills.
- Position: Contract (option to renew for the following school year) in a school setting
- Hours: Full-time (Monday - Friday); 32.5 hours/week
- Caseload: 4th grade mainstream students
- Start/End Date: 8/3/2026 - 5/27/2027
- High school diploma or equivalent required; an Associate's degree or higher in Sign Language Interpreting, Deaf Studies, or a related field is commonly preferred by school districts
- Must hold Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) Educational Interpreter Approval (or be eligible to obtain approval) to interpret for students in Illinois public PreK-12 schools
- Demonstrated proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and strong receptive and expressive interpreting skills
- Successful completion of an approved interpreter competency assessment, such as the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) with a 3.5+ score
- Knowledge of the Code of Professional Conduct and ethical standards for educational interpreters, including confidentiality and professional boundaries
- Ability to pass all required school district pre-employment screenings, including a criminal background check and any state-required employment clearances
- Successful completion of all required background checks and district onboarding requirements
- The ability to work in the U.S. without a sponsor
