Sheet Metal Technician

Description Summary The Sheet Metal Technician is responsible for performing aircraft structural maintenance, sheet metal repairs, modifications, fabrication, and component installations in support of the company’s flight training fleet and FAA Part 145 Repair Station operations. This position requires hands‑on experience with aircraft sheet metal fabrication and repair, including the ability to perform structural repairs in accordance with approved maintenance data, manufacturer specifications, FAA regulations, and company procedures. The ideal candidate will have aviation sheet metal experience and preferably hold an FAA Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) certificate. The Sheet Metal Technician works closely with Aircraft Maintenance Technicians, Inspectors, and other maintenance personnel to ensure aircraft are maintained safely, efficiently, and in compliance with applicable regulatory and quality standards. Essential Functions Perform aircraft sheet metal repairs, structural modifications, and fabrication work on training aircraft and other assigned aircraft. Perform structural inspections to identify damage, corrosion, cracks, wear, and other discrepancies requiring repair. Fabricate, repair, install, and modify aircraft sheet metal components, including aircraft skins, panels, brackets, fittings, and structural assemblies. Perform sheet metal processes including layout, cutting, drilling, bending, forming, dimpling, countersinking, riveting, and finishing. ? Remove and install aircraft components, panels, and access areas as required to support maintenance activities. ? Interpret aircraft maintenance manuals, structural repair documentation, work orders, drawings, and other approved maintenance data. Perform assigned maintenance tasks in accordance with FAA regulations, manufacturer requirements, FAA Part 145 Repair Station procedures, and company standards. Complete maintenance records, work orders, and required documentation accurately and timely in accordance with FAA Part 145 requirements and company procedures. Coordinate with A&P Technicians, Inspectors, and other Maintenance personnel regarding repair status, discrepancies, aircraft availability, and maintenance priorities. Communicate effectively with maintenance team members to support efficient workflow and timely completion of aircraft maintenance tasks. Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a clean, organized, and safe condition. Follow all company safety procedures, OSHA requirements, FAA regulations, and Repair Station quality standards. Support aircraft maintenance operations to minimize aircraft downtime and maintain fleet availability for flight training operations. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned. Competencies Knowledge of aircraft structural components, materials, fasteners, and repair techniques. Proficiency in aircraft sheet metal fabrication and repair processes. Ability to interpret technical manuals, drawings, diagrams, and maintenance documentation. Understanding of FAA regulations and aircraft maintenance practices. Ability to perform quality workmanship while maintaining attention to detail. Strong problem‑solving and troubleshooting skills. Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively with maintenance teams. Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple maintenance requirements in a flight training environment. Strong commitment to safety, compliance, and aircraft reliability. Effective communication skills and ability to document work accurately. Supervisory Responsibilities None Physical Demands The physical demands described below are representative of those required to successfully perform the essential functions of this position: Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, and work in aircraft maintenance environments for extended periods. Ability to work in confined areas and access aircraft structures as needed. Ability to work from ladders, platforms, and elevated surfaces. Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull tools, equipment, and aircraft components up to approximately 50 pounds. Ability to perform repetitive hand and arm movements associated with aircraft sheet metal work. Ability to use hand tools, power tools, and precision measuring equipment. Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE). Position Type and Expected Hours of Work Full-time position. Normal work schedule is Monday through Friday; however, schedules may vary based on aircraft maintenance requirements and operational needs. Must be willing to work overtime, weekends, holidays, or adjusted schedules as needed to support flight operations and aircraft availability. Travel Limited travel may be required for training, aircraft maintenance support, or other business-related activities. Requirements Required Education and Experience High school diploma or equivalent required. Minimum of 2 years of aviation sheet metal experience or aircraft structural repair experience. Experience performing aircraft sheet metal fabrication, repair, modification, and installation. Experience working with aircraft maintenance documentation and technical manuals. Ability to follow FAA-approved maintenance procedures and company Repair Station requirements. Preferred Education and Experience FAA Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) certificate preferred. Experience working in an FAA Part 145 Repair Station environment. Experience maintaining or repairing general aviation aircraft, particularly flight training aircraft. Experience supporting aircraft fleets in a flight school or commercial aviation environment. Experience with corrosion repair, structural inspections, and aircraft modifications. Experience with Cessna, Piper, or other general aviation training aircraft. Familiarity with FAA maintenance records, work orders, and quality control procedures.
