RN II LTAC

Dormont Manufacturing Company

At Houston Methodist, the Registered Nurse (RN) II position is a licensed staff nurse at the Competent to Proficient stage of Benner’s model of clinical practice. Responsibilities include providing professional nursing care to a diverse patient population, conducting nursing assessments, assisting with exams and treatment, patient education, and maintaining medical records. The RN II delivers direct patient care to patients with complex needs, collaborates with physicians and the interprofessional health care team, and acts as a patient and family advocate. Leadership roles involve participation in unit initiatives, serving as charge nurse or preceptor, and contributing to service line or hospital-wide initiatives. FLSA STATUS Non‑exempt QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION Graduate of an education program approved by the credentialing body for the required credential(s) indicated below in the Licenses and Certifications section EXPERIENCE Twelve months registered nurse experience in a healthcare environment LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS Required RN – Registered Nurse – Texas State Licensure – Texas Board of Nursing_PSV Compact Licensure – Must obtain permanent Texas license within 60 days (if establishing Texas residency) BLS – Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA) – American Heart Association ACLS – Advanced Cardiac Life Support or Instructor (AHA) – American Heart Association within 4 months Preferred Magnet – ANCC Recognized Certification NVCRISIS – Nonviolent Crisis Intervention or Instructor (CPI) KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, as determined through ongoing assessments and evaluations Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language necessary to perform essential functions Effective communication with patients, physicians, family members, and co‑workers with a customer service focus Strong assessment, organizational and problem‑solving skills to prioritize tasks Function independently and exercise judgment in interactions with physicians and the health care team Utilizes critical thinking and clinical judgment to work autonomously as defined by the Nurse Practice Act Proficient time management skills Maintains professional contributions per the Clinical Career Path program guide Working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook and related products ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS People Essential Functions Uses therapeutic communication and active listening to establish relationships with patients, families, and the interprofessional health care team Contributes to teamwork by being aware of unit acuity, offering assistance, and responding positively to requests for help; seeks and offers guidance appropriately Implements staff education specific to patient populations and unit processes; coaches and mentors staff and students, including preceptorship; promotes peer accountability towards improvement of unit-based scorecards for turnover, retention, and employee engagement Service Essential Functions Follows patient and family‑centered care standards per the Houston Methodist Professional Nursing Practice document; conducts assessments, assists with exams and treatment, and maintains records Develops, updates, and communicates plan of care, including discharge plans, in partnership with patients, families, and the health care team; prioritizes care based on patient needs and preferences; advocates to resolve clinical and ethical concerns Provides patient teaching based on learning needs, uses appropriate resources, and incorporates post‑discharge care planning; evaluates comprehension and adapts teaching methods Helps improve department patient satisfaction score through peer accountability to service standards Quality/Safety Essential Functions Follows nursing process standards per the Houston Methodist Professional Nursing Practice document Adheres to regulatory requirements and professional practice standards; identifies practice improvements using evidence to achieve core measures and patient safety outcomes, supported by accurate documentation Provides and modifies care for complex patients, coordinating with the interprofessional team; uses evidence‑based analytical approaches to guide clinical judgment Improves unit‑based quality and safety scores through peer accountability, reporting near misses, and collaboration with the health care team Finance Essential Functions Manages time effectively, documents care promptly, and minimizes incidental overtime; prioritizes daily tasks Contributes to unit resource utilization, including capital and operational budget needs; assists in meeting departmental financial targets by decreasing length of stay and optimizing efficiency Growth/Innovation Essential Functions Identifies and presents areas for innovation, efficiency, and improvement in patient care or unit operations using evidence‑based literature; proposes solutions via performance improvement projects and shared governance activities Champions new care pathways or service line implementations to improve service to the community; identifies trends for improvement opportunities and supports initiatives with research and presentation to governance and leadership Supplemental Requirements Work Attire Uniform: No Scrubs: Yes Business professional: No Other (department approved): No On‑Call Employees may be required to be on‑call during emergencies such as disaster or severe weather events, regardless of the information below.
